The worst decision the USMC made was to join SOC. Those Marines "contributed" to SOC were never going to go back the USMC. SOC does not return anything they take like a big blackhole.

I was in First Force Reconnaissance Company in 1967 at Camp Reasoner. I was in Second Platoon. Call sign was Hong Kong. Ran about 20 patrols before I got shot up and medically discharged in 1968.

Imo, regardless of branch, all these spec ops units should rip off their respective patches, and form one badass unit!

The first sentence of this documentary is blatantly false. Force Recon is not, nor has it ever been, special operations in the concept of Special Operations Forces.

It is very well known in "the community" that the CIA Field operations group has had a hard on for Force Recon Marines since Vietnam...pretty much every Force Recon Marine gets recruited at his enlistment contract time....that pretty much says it all.

Force Recon......Reconnaissance for Fleet Marine Force....intelligence gathering for the FMF.  No need to compete to see who is "MORE" special like other branches.  Semper Fi!!

it don't matter follow the money.  go sf (the army has a ton of cash) or seals (at least their pipeline is garaunteed), they'll always and i mean always have a mission, shit the rangers dont even always have a mission.  in peacetime, sf will still deploy.  seals will probably go back to their ships and deploy too but where is almost all war had?  on fuckin land (or over it anyway), so being able to swim, and jump, and dive is just a way to get to work, who cares.  its all about what you do when you get there.  honestly, if you look at reconnaissance...they're very conventional and so are the seals (their main mission IS NOT unconventional warfare), and the rangers (the rangers prime mission is direct action...if im not mistaken isn't that EXACTLY what conventional forces do, DIRECT ACTION against a foe/enemy? i rest my point.)  Honestly, the marine corp will not in the next 10-20 years 1. be in charge of socom, 2. have enough money to put together a tier 1 group ever (i mean seriously, the navy makes the budget for the marines and the navy obviously has decided to keep their aircraft carrier instead) and 3. have top down leadership with the mental know how to employ sof effectively across the full spectrum of conflicts.  but on the other hand...

ill be damn if the marines dont do a bang up job with very few men, beans, bullets, or fuckin bandaids that they have.  Anyone can talk abt recon all they want. but recon marines go to both freefall and dive- which is socom rated btw- (not just one or the other like SF, where you only get paid for one or the other...) and have in the past passed and represented recon in bud/s, SF dive school in key west, the beloved q course, MFF and in international schools like the british royal marines, and sas selection.  Recon has JTAC's and Snipers and have people who if they know are going into a combat zone will immediately pool money in the platoon so someone can start learning the language pronto, on their own without funds from headquearters. Amphib Recon was started literally through an experiment near the end of world war 2, which is the EARLIEST group of special operations. recon WITHOUT the sexiness of SOCOM and the money that is laid at the feet of sof units done some incredible things.  so in the end, ill say this...sof has some sexy stuff, they get better opportunities for training (they got more money), but you'll never meet a bunch of guys with the go big or go home mentality in your life.  i almost fuckin promise you.

out of all the years i spent in the Marine corps, i was fortunate to be able to do a lot of cross training with Force recon Marines as well as some Marine snipers,  and one thing i must say is Marines always seem to get a lot more done with less Hype  and less media coverage.  it's just as simple as it's your job so get it done.  no need to wear a beret.. no matter what color it is..  just go get the mission done and then go home.  i Loved my time in the Marines. many good memories. many good friends.  Semper-fi.
