Use these great video tips from Hope! I also check the price per ounce or per serving because sometimes now the smallest or mid size package is cheapest. I also hedge against inflation by buying a yearly supply example denture tablets which we use to sanitize toothbrushes and mouth guards. I bought a year:s supply for $20. Currently a year's supply would be $38. These don't go on sale. Of course it is just a one year buffer but it all adds up. We are also doing things some would consider extreme like cloth handkerchief, cloth napkins at the table and toilet sprayer instead of toilet paper. Saved several hundred dollars that way last year. My colleague has 3 teen girls and herself. They save $300/year with reusable monthly female products. At work I keep "emergency food" so if I forget my lunch or work overtime I am not tempted by drive thru, delivery, etc. So we reconsider every purchase in terms of annual cost. Maybe spending .50 cents more per week for name brand whatever doesn't sound like a big deal but it's $5.50 more per year or $55 over 10 years. Not worth it for us. Love the comparison between diy and readymade.

I only buy one frozen prepared meal, pizza. The only reason I buy it is on the days I do yard work, I'm usually so exhausted (I'm 74) I need something that required no prep time and frozen pizza fits the bill. The rest of the prepared meals are too salty for my taste, because I cut down of salt years ago and now even restaurant food is like eating a salt lick.

The only grocery stores close to me are Walmart and Harp's. Harp's is high on everything. Harp's sale prices are higher than the Walmart regular price. We do have an Allen's Food Store, but they are higher than Harp's.

Another thing I like to do is buy fresh meat in bulk when it's on sale due to its approaching expiration date, and then store it in the freezer.

OMG! Yes! You NEED a list! Whenever I don't take a list, I end up with random items to fill up what I feel I "expected" to spend - but I didn't get a bunch of items I needed! So, back to the store I go and spend more to get them. Plus some more random items that worked their way into my basket.

I set my alarm so I don't miss the opportunity to get anywhere from 5 to 10,000 free points... I just used a $5 reward today on my light bill

We are using your term for treasure hunting at Krogers: sharking! On today’s sharking trip we got a free bag of SunChips from a “Preferred Customer” coupon, then found a tray of three chicken leg quarters on markdown for $2.17 as well as markdowns on salmon burgers, fajita mix chicken, a pound of 80/20 ground beef and yes, some to-die-for, no resistance on my part, bakery made chocolate chip cookies. There was nada in the 99 cent red bag veggie bin and only decaf - the horror! - whole bean coffee in the “Last Chance” section. Oh! And two 1-pound boxes of penne pasta for 79 cents each plus a bunch of fresh Italian parsley, the only full price item. The whole thing came to $20.68. Thanks for your wonderful continuing education. It’s so appreciated. Your Knoxville Doppelgängers, Ken and Sophia

Grow as much of your own food as you can, even if you have a small backyard or a balcony in an apartment or condo. You would be surprised how much food you can grow in large or medium sized flower pots, washtubs, large pails etc. About 10 years before I retired, I planted various fruit trees and bushes, which now matured, cost me nothing to eat fresh and nutritious produce from them. Every month, I participate in a local excess food distribution program in our area that costs $25 to buy one share, no income restrictions or limit on how many shares to buy. Each share gives you from $150 to $200 worth of a variety of excess production food, that would otherwise go to the landfill. Between my garden and this food program, I spend $40 to $60/ mth on the incidentals I need at the grocery store. I eat nutritiously and very well. What I don't need/want that I have received from the food program, I give away to friends, family or the local Soup Kitchen. Everyone wins!

As a vegan husband and wife we are pretty good about what we eat but it seems the essentials of fruit and veg is going up. We use Flashfood etc to help offset but I struggle with keeping the price down on the shop. I know a lot of people are not vegan but do you have advice on specific ways to keep the fresh food cost down for us vegans? We do stock up on frozen but again, we do need the fresh. We do not have any amish stores around here or bulk shops unfortunately. Any ideas are appreciated. Love the show you two!!

Also, keep an eye on the screen that shows the prices as things are being rung up. Just yesterday I bought six clearance items that were marked 2 for $1.99 or 2 for $2.49. They all rang up as, $1.99 or $2.49 each. I would not have bought them if that was the price. It was corrected, but if I wasn’t watching, I would not have caught that. I always put things like that as the last items to be rung up so they’re not rung up while I’m still loading things onto the belt and miss it.

Your comparison of the prepped beans and rice is great... what is even better is if you buy your rice in bulk I've gotten it recently when buying 20 pounds for less than 50 cents a pound. That gives you the money to add spices and maybe some canned tomatoes and still be under $3 for an enormous amount.
