Too much power draw for me. I want to built a home server with Proxmox. I will be memory limited most of the time. Might as well buy a second-hand old 6th or 7th gen i3 or i5 xxxxT for less than $100 and put 32+ GB in it.

Hi. Great videos! I really like them.

One thing that I would want to see is a comparison between 1L PCs and laptops, because I feel that laptops have become less repairable and very expensive and no longer provide a justifiable performance to cost ratio for users to purchase them. Plus if one part goes wrong, such as a flex cable or battery, we might have to throw the entire laptop as original parts are not available after 3 years generally.

I am specifically looking to use a portable display from Dell or Lenovo and couple it with 1L PC. But I am not sure if performance, whether games can be played, or whether they will be better than laptops that heat up and throttle. If you could make some content on it, it would be very interesting.

I have the Optiplex 3000 which I modified to have a tower cooler. The heat is just way too high on the i5-12500T with the stock cooler. Now I can change the processor even to an i9 if I want.

Very interesting. Thanks for this comparison. I was tempted to get the non-T version of the 13500 Micro on Dell's Outlet, now I am not sure (as 13th gen runs even hotter than 12th). May wait for the 28W Meteor Lake Asus Mini PC instead.

Unlike many of the people buying these, I use my micro desktop as my daily driver. I use it as my personal machine as well as my work machine. I'm currently sporting an Optiplex 3080 Micro, with 64 GB of RAM, an i5 10500T, and a WD Black SN770 1TB. It works amazingly well for what I need it to do, but I've been wanting to play some games on my ultrawide monitor and thus started coveting recent higher end models. The lack of appropriate cooling in these makes me shudder away from the 65W options, and now I'm wondering how long it'll be until I build myself a modest desktop to be able to play some casual games.

That said, once I move on from these, I'd definitely love to get a couple of used Optiplex 3080 Micros and a small network switch to make myself a nice Kubernetes cluster, hosting Plex, a Minecraft server, and more. It would eliminate the need I have for my VPS. Here's hoping these will get better and better and soon reach the point more and more people use them as their main computers.

I have one of these. We even considered using them for VDI at the office. We tested it with Horizon desktop and might consider Azure with these in the future.

Dell sent us a couple as eval and we also had Microsoft send out several Surface tablets and laptop to test with this.

looks nice but having a i7-12700 in this little thing is moot. can't get the performance due to thermals and much higher power draw which goes unutilised. also the size of the power brick is getting bigger than the unit itself, so space saving is not all that. a model with a lower cpu will be overall better for what this is.

I have one with a i7-12700 (65W). Fast as hell with gen 4 nvme. I think it might be a similiar motherboard used in the precision 3240/3260 compact which has a riser card on that slot 1. We get a lot of noise complaints at work on these 65w units for fan noise.

Lack of Thunderbolt to facilitate a one cable solution means this is a no go. You have it on your laptops, put it in your mini pcs.

So after a minute, your i7 thermal throttles down to an i5? Hmmmm.
Does the heat sink use heat pipes? Not sure how that would compare to a conventional design copper heat sink (note that copper has roughly twice the thermal conductivity of aluminum, and that heat pipes give you a bonus in their 'latent heat of vaporization' - the extra heat they absorb in order to vaporize the liquid sealed up inside the heat pipes). Comments?

That is the exact same motherboard in the Dell 3260, and the same heatsink/fan that comes with the i5 in a 3260. Which was terrible for even the i5, and I switched it to the i7/i9 heatsink fan they have for the 3260, which obviously won't fit in this case. I will say, the Dell thermals management on this motherboard is straight up garbage. In the 3260, the fan curve is way late in trying to catch up with the thermals. ....and then usually the ramp down isn't thermals, it's a voltage error.

I honestly don't think that these mini micro cases are the right solution for 65w TDP based CPUs. They are rather good fit for 35w TDP based T processor at best. Another personal thing that I generally tend to do is to use SATA III based M.2 SSD over NVME for these small cases just to keep things a tad bit less hotter. No one would or should be using these PCs for gaming anyway. For office work SATA SSDs are just fine. Another less important issue is not having regular 2.5" SATA port which can be used for larger drives for backups and other stuff. They had it on 5090. Thanks.

Deployed a bunch of the previous gens of these. All the staff got i5 and all the managers got i7. The i7 system noise can only be described as 'jet engines'. Windows updates were the highest load in their use and would always trigger jet mode for the fan. Everyone gets i5 now if I have any say in the purchasing decision.

I recently bought a very cheap used 7040 micro and upgraded the drive and added RAM. The STH videos have been hugely helpful in choosing a model and doing the upgrades. Thanks!!
