Not very scientific. To really gauge the impact of the wheel upgrade, you should have used the same tyres, tubes and cassette for both. Control all the variables except the one you want to investigate. Primary school kids know this from Key Stage 2 science curriculum!

Seeing the price of those aluminium wheels I can't comprehend how people are willing to spend that much on shallow (and heavy) wheels. I'm fairly certain chinese wheel manufacturers will be overtaking that part of the market in the near future. Owning a pair of 50mm carbon wheels from a chinese brand that weigh 1400g (ish) and feel absolutely fantastic for roughly 500€ including taxes, I will never bother purchasing a pair of these wheels, ever.

Can you do like expensive rims with cheap tyres vs cheap rims with expensive tyres?

Would love to upgrade to dura ace, but without a serious upgrade of my bank account, I will settle with ultegra.

Let's say you ride at 40 km/h, the combined watts saving Ollie is talking about would be 30-40 watts. Let's assume my buddy and I have the same bike, group set, weight/height and drag coefficient. He (who's got the deep section carbon wheels, low rolling resistance tires and inner tubes) would need to push let's say 300W to achieve this speed compared to 330-340W for me? Am i getting this right?

🤔 Why is everything you seem to promote dominated by speed? Speed is important to a degree sure however, efficiency & feedback & stiffness is as important.. speed is determined by what the rider generates and not necessarily by all of the equipment you are sponsored to promote, there has always been a saying in the world of cycling, no such thing as a fast bike, but a bike designed to be ridden fast, it’s the rider that’s fast … and remember the vast majority of men weigh over 70kg 🚴‍♂️🚴‍♂️

First of all rim brakes are not standard anymore so are disc brakes, why not do this test with disc brake standard. Further on wheels should be compared with the same tyre setup 🙈 well I think tyres and tubes make the deal not the wheels especially beginners with an avg speed below 40km/h don't feel the aerodynamic difference - but weight difference can make the deal especially uphill!

So true, you can really feel the differences of the wheelset. Mine is fulcrum quattro racing, Cnc 50mm and a campagnolo bora wto.. great vid!

I'd like to see a comparison of net energy saved over distance with te same finish time. I'm not a racer, so 2 min saved over 40km means nothing to me... but 500 calories saved over 200km might.

I have seen some Chinese brands like Elite and Yoeleo, and I have read some reviews that say they they are actually good for the price. If you'd have to recommend one of this Chinese brands, which one would be?

Latex…is that fair ?

I think one can have fun with either wheelset and that is the most important thing. One should never be disuaded from buying a road bike just because they can't afford high end wheels.
As for tires, they're vital indeed. That said, whenever I buy high end tires, they last me a single season, if that. It's hardly cost effective unless you're actually racing, imo.
Speed is certianly fun and having gold "cups" on Strava feels good but I still maintain that one doesn't need to break the bank with high end gear to enjoy a ride.
P.S. nothing feels quite as amazing as flying past a gentleman on a high end bike with your entry level clunker.

And why don't you the test with the same wheel and different tyres? The cheap and the expensive? You say that the best upgrade is the tyre but you did not demonstrate it.

All you guys suffer from a disorder, with a brand new and top of the line bike immediately you start upgrading.

It makes no sense that bicycle wheels & tires can be more expensive than car tires.

High end wheels look cool, but if the originals were good the small improvement may not be worth the very high price.

I purchased a 2nd hand pair of carbon wheels and they look awesome at 350 euro.... are they faster??? No idea but they look lovely ...

on flats with deep section wheels i've PR'd on some segments without putting any effort in while on shorter wheels on a climbing bike i would have to put in considerable amount of effort. deep wheels help.

I went with hand built 50mm carbon rims by Owen Wheels of Rat Race Cycles of Nunhead in South East London, they are disc brake rims set with 160mm Ultegra roters, thru axels & the cassette is Ultegra R8000 11/32 all wrapped in latex tubes & Continental Gp5000 tyres all in for £1,200 happy days win, win....!!!
