Valley girl speaking, ‘Like you know’, is hard to let go. I was a teen in the early 80’s living in L.A. and now these words bring me joy. I’m glad I came across this to help me keep it real though in a professional setting. Thanks.

I see the point. However, in textbooks, that is what Insee.
In addition, in oral examinations, an appropriate textbook writer style is more desirable, isn't it?

Sorry, I disagree with all of this. Isn't anybody allowed to have NUANCED VIEWS anymore? If someone speaks to me in absolutes with no shades of gray or disclaimers, I assume they are simpletons without a real idea of what they're talking about. In work, all situations are FULL of exceptions, disclaimers, shades of gray, nuance. I absolutely hate when so-called "leaders" talk to me confidently as if something is a black and white clear situation when it's riddled with gray zones in reality. "Kind of" or "Basically" makes the person more human and trustworthy. I'm inclined to distrust people who talk like textbooks and without any filler words.

Thanks for this video. My conclusion is : not to add any words if it’s not adding any value to the sentence and keep it as short as possible. However, this example here doesn’t seem passing the same meaning : “ I hated working on Saturdays” vs “I hated the fact that I had to work on Saturday “. The latter is focusing on the force of work on Saturday not the working on Saturday itself. I think to make it less verbose we can only remove “the fact” but we need to keep “had to” part to keep enforcement awareness in the sentence.
Please let me know if I’m mistaken. Much appreciated 🙏 ❤

I had parents that gently corrected my speech , however many people never had this advantage. People do not realize how extremely annoying it is to listen to the word “ like” in almost every sentence!
Improper English is hard to listen to . Professionals who use profanity , that’s terrible! I have incurred all of these in the workplace.

For some of us Asian foreign speakers, we’re used to honorifics or other ways of showing respect to soften our speech and show humility. It has been so ingrained in us. Fillers are just our ways to substitute honorifics due to lack of alternatives. After knowing American culture more, I realized humility is often taken as lack of confidence. I think it’s a cultural difference. Sometimes I laughed inside knowing I was mistaken as being unsure..No… I wasn’t unsure. I just don’t want you to feel bad!
