When people like me, who are not developers, start to be able to make software only with AI, that is the time to be worried. Currently there is no way I can do anything meaningful at all. Programming is just way too complicated. Only actual devs can use AI right now. 2025... yeah BS.

Also if AI reaches a point where it can do one of the most complicated human activities on it's own, that is the time to be prepared for a brave new world, programming jobs would be the least of your worries.

Painters need to be worried right now, not devs.

We shouldn't be thinking of Meta as a 'FAANG' company anymore. Everything Meta has tried to do in the last few years has been a flop, metaverse, threads etc. When you compare them to their supposed peers (Microsoft, Google, Apple, Amazon) they are a joke.

For any newbies who are worried, please have a read.
Anyone who quits programming because of this AI hype is not just 🤡clown... you are the whole circus.🎪

1) Zuckerberg was literally in an interview not long ago talking about how he would choose Python over PHP if he had to build Facebook today.

2) Anyone who knows what Coursera is knows that Meta have been pushing their Professional Certificates that focus on React and React-Native (for obvious reasons), Django (which they use for Instagram).

3) Many of these AI tools are going to need maintenance. Do you think you just deploy and forget about it?

4) Notice how the rhetoric is usually "AI replacing Software Engineers"? Hmm.. No one would say AI will replace hackers/cybersecurity professional because they know they'd look super stupid when they get hacked... And what do you think the cybersec guys are securing... I'll give you a hint AppSec... oh that's right.

5. Nvidia who has a bigger stake in the AI game than Meta, are complaining about the skill shortage of Software Engineer they want to hire and have reccently released to training course. Hmm... why didn't they just train the AI? Oh wait they need... lmao

This is absolute nonsense. It will be many years before AI can consistently generate even small sections of code consistently and that is usable in context of an existing project.

how they will get new senior engineers if there will be no mid engineers ? Still you will need to hire juniors to setup systems and mid engineers just to maintain AI agents and their systems :D . Less will be hired ? More competition you will see in markets (more startups will pop up).
Less senior engineers , means more pricey they will be to hire.
Nothing makes sense , we (engineers) will survive and thrive as individuals even more.

This looks like FB are using 'AI' a cover for layoffs. The truth is big tech over hired and now they need to offload people but at the same time need a narrative to keep the money coming in from Wall Street. "AI is replacing software engineers" sounds a lot more appealing to investors than "We are a bloated organisation, akin to a Soviet bureaucracy, with a lot of people highly paid to deliver things of dubious value, and now we are quietly getting rid of them".

For now AI is capable to create some boilerplate stuff and when you write a comment saying "loop over this array" it will do that. But that is it basically. It can look a few lines before and after your prompt and come up with stuff that you still need to check, modify and debug. In my experience it is faster, more enjoyable and of better quality when I write it myself and the most important thing : writing it myself makes me a better programmer.

Added to that LLM creators are already saying they need more code and code of better quality to make the LLM's better. And that is after scraping the entire internet (or rather : StackOverflow and Github). When the entire internet is not good enough for a Large Language Model to get better how would they possibly make great improvements ?

When it can replace mid-level engineers it can replace mid-level of all kinds of jobs. And it wont happen with LLMs as we know them right now no matter the data. Something more has to happen.

I use AI a lot in C++ development, but only as a psychic search engine to dig up stuff faster. In practice, it hits ground all the time, even after constant clarification of prompts. The new AI "reasoning" models seem to be doing what all of us do when we clarify and resubmit, and it's not in the neighborhood of autonomous, and no path to get there. 80% accurate is absolutely f-ing abysmal for coding. These tools really only work in the hands of a competent developer who can immediately correct them and get them back on track.

Low interest rates and bubbles inflating = More mid level devs to take advantage of LLMs and create more diversified, comprehensive solutions = more production

Some of this might be true. But not for the hyped-up dire catastrophic reasons of being out of the job. The future of software won't have UI's like we've known them thus far ... with buttons, grids and text inputs controlled by devices like keyboards and mice. Instead all software will be completely accessible through human interaction like speech, vision, touch and sound. Information will be pivoted and aggregated based on casual verbal speech and the output spoken entirely or at least sent to a screen with exactly the information needed without a button press or mouse click. I believe that's where AI will have show it's ultimate usefulness. I've been in software since the 90's and not much has changed other than smaller form factor. Honestly, I'd rather be working on technology like that then program some stupid variation of grid for the 10,000th time whether it's in VB, C++ or JavaScript with annoying CSS rules that just get in the way of a finished product.

AI will further the gap between have and have nots until 1% of people who will have 99% of money will be running companies to compete for 1% of the money left with 99% of people who will be unable to make any more money until it all collapses.

Ehm, If they eliminate need for software developers, there won't be a need for so much designers, product people, marketing and even sales. So basically if we are going down, everyone is. That leads to a lot of people not having money to pay for other services, so that leads to -> people working in other services (restaurants, private medicine practices, spa etc) are not gonna have taht much work. So that leads to basically everyone being poor because milions of people were replaced with AI. And then you have very very rich minority and very hungry majority of people. And you know what happens then? Civil Wars.

What's annoying with this AI replacing software engineers question is, that there are so many areas where AI as it is today is 100% effective. This single obsession with replacing software engineers is annoying. People are really simplifying the software development experience. Also, what makes people think that someone who can write software can't just move to ML? I worked in ML before shifting to software development as there were fewer opportunities in AI in the past years. It's really really easy for software engineers to adjust and move where there are more opportunities.

Tbh, my opinion is that maybe maybe with luck in 2030 this might happen, but at the moment I'm building a startup and since I've never done backend before I started asking chatgpt questions, and my God, sometimes is such a waste of time. I mean, for simple stuff and questions that don't require a lot of context it does a good enough job, but on something just a bit more complicated it kinda makes you lose way more time than doing it yourself from the start.

This is so depressing. I was poor and struggling my whole life. I tried for years to become a software engineer, finally got in, had to learn how to be in office jobs in general, had two or three companies where I never really found my niche, and now i've been unemployed for over a year. I tried to hold out and put my life on slow drip thinking things had to get better, but they haven't. I feel so stupid for not enacting a plan that didn't involve getting hired soon. Even the apps i've been building feel impossible to make a living from.
In general, i think if ai takes your job, then fuck it, learn something else. But this wasn't just ai, it was economic crash combined with simultaneous amazing advancements in ai.

I think the skills, motivation and life circumstances to be a salaried software engineer at a company has almost no intrinsic overlap with the skills needed to be an entrepreneur and start a business.

Some engineers will leverage ai to do their own thing, but if ai causes widespread reduction in salaried software engineering jobs, I think the outcome will be people loosing their jobs with no upside.

Speaking in the context of Australia, our manufacturing industry went through a decades long death starting with tool manufacturering closing down, and ending with the final automotive manufacturing ending in 2017. The impact was very talented, experienced and skilled professionals, technicians to engineerslost their jobs and never found equivalent work to use their now redundant skills. What never happened was a renaissance of micro manufacturers using new efficiency and technology to start new businesses.

Just my two cents, but software engineers who see themselves as a tool to be told by business exactly what to make will see a lot of pressure to produce more.under ai, possibly reducing these roles in the medium term. The role of an engineer has always need to translate buisness need into actionable results. Emgineers who are able to translate a buisness want to a actionable and effective technical plan and ourcome will still be as nessisary as ever for a long way down the ai development path.

Now I'm just yelling into the void, but I think a lot of companies who dont know how to leverage technology and currently see no value for their IT departments will probably replace their swe's with ai, similarly see no value and be happy with the trade.

Man AI is still trash. I’m jr swe and I recently ran into an issue on dev and when I asked chatgpt he/she recommended me multiple of ugly solutions that I had to do in my code. All it took actually were 3 keyboard keys to click on the browser that solved the issue. I had this type of issues multiple times with the AI. In my opinion, AI is just a code/text generator you cannot build a skyscraper with it (tldr: you cannot build gta with the AI). I believe that AI is still trash and as long as my company didn’t fire me while writing this comment then it’s trash and the layoffs are happening due to the bad economy and the high interest rate.
