With KISS, their careers were flagging anyway. The drop of the facepaint was an attempt to revitalize them. They got one more big hit out of the publicity that created, then they went the direction they were headed anyway.

The biggest SNAFU in Rock History was when 3 up and coming Rockers decided that doing a show was so important that they thought it would be ok to fly in a tiny airplane during a Midwest deepfreeze blizzard just to make a show. A show isn't worth your life, or the pain and sense of loss that decision caused millions of other people.

I was really bummed when Van Halen and David Lee Roth parted ways. That was the real Van Halen and nothing after that original lineup compares. Sure Van Hagar sold a lot of albums but they just lost their edge.

Music is so Cringe… I toured the world, Drank With Lemmy, Hung Johnathan from KORN upside down in a mini golf course video shoot, Worked with sublime, 50¢, etc.. was big in Japan and etc… I quit Music after 25+ yrs and wish I never got involved.. Girls were rad.

With respect, being a fan, I have to disagree with your assertion of KISS.
The “characters” needed to go, because the band was at a crossroads. And, although some fans didn’t like the career move, the band actually gained a bigger fan base, and their albums continued to acquire Platinum status. More people started to see them as more than a cartoon band. Then the time came to bring it back, and they did. KISS has always been good at re-inventing themselves, in one way, or another.

I am surprised you did not point out the source of tension between Quiet Riot and Ozzy. Randy Rhodes, who was very important to the rise of QR, left that band to join Ozzy. Randy made Ozzy's first two solo records what they became. At the time he was in QR, there was a cold war battle between that band and Van Halen in the LA scene. These two guitar masters were clearly going to boom into something bigger, when both bands were merely bar bands. I was lucky enough to visit LA when this was happening, and it was clear to many Randy and Eddie were out to outperform each other in their bands. I do not know the timing, but if QR idiot lead singer punched Ozzy over stealing Randy away, that would at least make sense.

In the early 90’s I, along with 50k others, packed into the Oakland Coliseum to see “Pink Floyd” (the sans Roger Watters version) As crazy as this sounds I can’t remember a single cohesive moment of that concert. I remember my seats. Remember the mountainous sound system struggling to pull it off and my best guess is that ubiquitous indica had a quite a bit to do with it. But whereas I well remember other concerts of that ‘91-‘94 era: Crowded House, Lenny Kravitz, Morrissey, even Paul McCartney and especially Verve at a sold out Slims nightclub for Storm in Heaven; when it comes to that night of “Pink Floyd” all I have to prove any of it is a very faded ticket stub. For some time afterward my friends and I would quip “you know there were some other notables in the band…” Hate to say it but if pressed to summarize the massive arena show in a single word it would probably be “overrated.” But what can be said? Bands like Radiohead, Ride, Charlatans and the aforementioned Verve were flipping my lid much the way the epic Floyd albums of the 1970’s did

OK Professor, you’ve done a lot of valuable work and earn your success but don’t fall prey to the same thing that tripped up so many rock stars: ego. This is the first time I’ve seen you make a real misstep. In back-to-back stories about GNR and Floyd, your personal preferences led you to take opposite sides in basically the same story: musicians clinging to a band’s name after the marriage is over.

I understand the economic driver to keep operating under the same name. But that very temptation is what undermines the credibility of those who do so. I mean lets face it - the ability to sell records under an established name proves nothing. All new people could be hired to do that (and its been done – might be a good topic for you. you’re welcome ;). Musicians don’t lose their ability just because of a breakup, so the fact that they can still play and maybe do some adequate writing also proves nothing.
If anything, the economic pressure alone (to drag names around long after its appropriate) should mean people should err on the side of retiring the name any time its in question.
