I remember my 2 years with a 96 E38 long wheelbase, nothing I had driven up til then had made me feel connected to the road like that car. You cannot really put it into words either... you have to Drive one to fully understand.

That "Impala Brown" paint color is so cool.. like the shade of a freshly minted penny.

.....My first one was the 1995 E38 model. It was beautiful, very athletic, strong, and very quick and fast. Never had any problems with it.
.......In 2001, BMW released the new body style - The 2002 model BMW 7-series, but it didn't drive quite like the E38 models. It was also ugly for my now higher taste for a BMW. So I happily traded my 1995 BMW E38 model for one of the last three 2001 BMW E38 740i M-Sports Package, with a $10,000:00 discount. I have never regretted every dime, time, and energy behind the wheels of this superb BMW car.
......This car single-handedly caused the competing Mercedes S-Class to suffer very badly in sales during that period.
.....The 2001 BMW 740i M-Sports became the king of all top mass production V8s for over a decade and to a large extent, still a top notch luxury sports car today.
.....The BMW E38 styling and sportiness became the benchmark that most high-end car makers still continue to copy or replicate even in 2024.
......At gas stations, gyms, service shops, kids schools, etc, this car is respectfully complimented by all and sundry. They usually ask me - how much would you want to let this car go?

I nearly bought one of these back in the day. The thing is I am English. So much as I liked it, I also like the Jaguar XJ84.0 which is what I eventually bought. This is one of Dougs ealier video's when he did pick on strange things like how dated the (at the time in period) tech was. He also complains about English not being indicated by a U. As an English person who speaks English, I find E to denote English to be what I expected. The BMS at this time were very good. Two years ago I bought an E39 5 series with low miles. It is lovely to drive.

Now it wasn’t the best luxury sedan … the s600 would destroy this car . It’s not even comparable to a 2000 ls400 . I had one brand new and if this was the greatest bmw then that explains why bmw sucks

I watched this review first 2 years ago and I didn't pay much attention at the time, less than an year ago I bought a E38 740i with the V8 engine and as an owner I can now state that this was the absolute dumbest opening and closing of the boot I've ever seen :D

1. You can just click the boot button with your thumb when the car is unlocked, you don't need to put the key in. You can also press the 3rd button on the car remote to open it.
2. To close it, you just put it down and just press it gently from the top and the soft close engages immediately

Whats the need to have a v12 engine just to produce 300 and sth hosepower?

I love this Year of the 7 Series

"With technology this car gave you everything you needed but it wasn't an excessive overkill of Technology" which is what you see with today's modern cars. In other words. "BLING!" The truth is, cars have still not seen a noticeable increase with MPG since the 1990's. Fuel Injection. 1990's. Anti-lock brakes. 1990's. Air bags. 1990's. OBD II diagnostics. 1990's. Useless flat screens that are an eyesore right on top of the dash (no option to fold them away either) that make you take your eyes off of the road to use to turn on the air conditioner. 2020's. Brilliant! But MPG still the same. (I don't consider going from 20 MPG to 21 MPG worth noting).

Older videos are simply better and more enjoyable to watch. Not so repetetive.

I don't understand why he always can't show us the road while driving. At least split the screen 50/50 with half being your driving view and the other half talking

And it's a good looking car. Surprised that I even like the color. It's different. Maybe squeeze a few more HP out of that V12? Glad to see you mentioned the DSP regarding the stereo. For 2001 a digital signal processor was very cutting edge.

Completely agree! These were/are gorgeous sedans. And I too actually prefer the shorter wheelbase model, but all are lovely. Once in a blue moon I still see one of these on the road, and even now the sleek, simple design is SO much nicer than the bland, generic-ness of the modern BMWs.

What the hell Doug?

You don't need the key to open the trunk from the outside, just press the key hole/button and the trunk pops open. No need to insert the key, unless its locked.
There is center console storage. A drawer slides out from the door you can clearly see under the armrest, facing towards the ash tray. (He sat in the car, didn't he think the lid must be there to cover something? Didn't he try opening it? Mind... blown.)

E38 is two better than E36 ;) ;)
