I just found out I have low porosity medium density hair and I was using castor oil for years.. I mean HEAVY stuff, then I learned, today lol that I should only use lighter oils. So I’m happy to now know! But my goodness had I knew sooner how important this is, my hair would’ve been much healthier years ago

Thank you for this school information! I knew nothing about my African hair as a kid except I had tight rolled curls = b b's. And as an adult I noticed after years of shaving, I had some scalp issues with drying. But I have just learned that I have thin porosity hair and lighter oils should be my go to.

I have indian 2b/2c LP thick/dense strands...I recently figured that out and all my life had used coconut oil but had a lot of hair shedding all my life contrary to our beliefs that it was a fit all oil. I also started using argan oil as a mid week anti hair drying step. After figuring out my hair type, I was considering to stop coco oil and start with grapeseed oil. Any recommendations on that or some other oils based on my hair type cause I seriously can't figure it out? Honestly, any help/insight would be greatly appreciated! :)

I’m still learning my top oils but I love using onion oil as an overnight oil treatment and although I have thick high porosity hair my hair loves grape seed oil, olive oil shea butter and mango butter and biotin

Hell, wish this info was available when I startedy natural hair jpurney 30 years ago. I am 3a/b low porosity and have tried every single oil I can find. Only to find the best oil for regular use is the cheapest .... Sunflower or canola oil. Coconut oil is for my summer routine and hot oil prepoo. Spent a fortune over the years on expensive oils that didn't work for me.

One other thing, I have low thyroid which I learned makes my hair dry.

I don't use straighteners i.e. relaxers, texturizers. I don't use heat on my hair other than body temp in plastic caps for deep conditioning.

But I'm not quite ready to give in to my graying hair just yet, tho I'll be 58 years young this year, 2023😉

I already have low porosity 4c kinky/coily hair on majority of my head & it's very course & thick.

I know the coloring doesn't help my DRY hair problem.

Okay. Not gonna lie. I wasn't too sure on this one, because I thought heavy oil on fine hi-po hair was gonna be so heavy, but I had to try it and see. I've been dampening my hair, using leave in, and then sealing ends and massaging scalp with JBCO every night this week because this dry Indiana air has me dried out, and 🫨🫨🫨 it is no more low volume than anything else, but I still.have a bit of moisture at the end of the day, which is different for me. Was doing g the same process with lighter oils and I just looked greasy but the ends still felt dry. Morning refresh seems to br easier and take less hair tra or water to get the job done too. I have low porosity thick hair and it’s weird that I can pick from all 3 categories. Daily oils is Argan and almond oils, for braiding I like to seal with castor oil, but when I’m doing an Ayurvedic mask I generally mix the herbs with avocado or pumpkin oil

Oil that attracts water inside of the hair and water in general changes the PH in a way it makes the hair fragile.
The hair wants to be in neutral state.
Chose products that sit ontop of the hair that protects it from the environment like UV, heat and more. But then you need to use a clarifying shampoo to get rid of that product so it doesn't build up.

The oils my hair likes: Castor Oil (regular and Jamaican Black), Argan oil, Sesame Seed Oil, Palm oil. (I'm thinking Babassu might be another...trying it out) Castor oil is a mainstay, year round and weekly. Some sections of my hair are low and others are normal to high porosity.
