Thanks for finally pushing me to stop trying to justify having my phone in my bedroom. No matter how many apps I get rid of, I can't stop the scroll or playing solitaire on my phone. The line about wanting to put down the phone but I can't struck a chord. I finally went to my local thrift store and got a basic electronic alarm clock for a couple bucks. My phone has now moved home to my computer desk. I still need a phone with apps due to my work, but I don't need it living next to me all the time even when I sleep.

You wouldn't have needed to check maps for your way home in olden times, they used to have pamphlet timetables on the bus that you could take

Staatssenator fordert mehr Maßnahmen

Staatssenator David Lawson

Senator Lawson forderte ebenfalls sofortiges Handeln.

Sounds counterintuitive but I recently went with a dual phone method: work phone, entertainment phone.

Work phone has data, entertainment phone is off hotspot but mostly stays at home.

After work I’ll put the work phone on charger and often I’ll go well into the evening until I remember to check something on entertainment phone.

It’s pretty effective and I’ve noticed you get really good battery life by not using one phone all day. You can also get phones 3 years old for real cheap that work well.

been wanting to do this a while. i still can't fully quit my phone (if anyone knows how to use outlook for work without being forced to use the microsoft authenticator app pls lmk) but ive been "phasing out" parts of my phone the past few months & this gives me lots of ideas!

personally i like to keep social media on my PC. it helps me only use my phone as a multi-tool (camera, GPS, translator, etc) & i pick it up a LOT less (same w/ PC bc it takes forever to boot up)

I was born is ‘85 and we didn’t have enough money to afford cell phones until much much later after they came out. Grew up with landline. Corded until we got the cordless. That was dope. And the tape answering machine. Ah the memories.

Kind of random memory that was prompted by that car music bit - when my now-husband and I visited the South Island (NZ - we live in the North Island) a few years ago, we borrowed a car from his mum's partner, and it didn't have auxiliary or radio or anything, so we couldn't play music. Music helps my husband to focus while he's driving, so I ended up spending hours and hours just singing for him while we were driving around lol. It's a good thing I have a decent voice 🤭

I have deleted all social media on my phone for over a month now and I don't think I'll ever redownload it. I check instagram on my laptop occasionally, but I really rarely reach for it tbh, and once a month I download it to post a wee photodump but that's it. It has absolutely changed my life. I feel so much less angry reading stupid comments everyday, I started training for a 10km race, I feel more present when I'm with people, I have read eight books in a month, I go to the cinema once a week, I've gone to the theatre a couple times, I sleep so much better. I just had no idea how drastically my life has changed, and I just don't think I'll ever go back. I would highly recommend it.

Recently, my roommate and I bought this thing called "The Brick" which, once you tap your phone to it, locks all the apps you wish not to open/get notifications from. It has helped me decrease my social media time and honestly has made me realize how often I up Instagram without even thinking. Highly recommend for anyone who is looking for a way to control their screentime without getting rid of their phone/the apps.

Also, this reminded me of How To With John Wilson, which is to say, it was incredibly heartfelt and beautifully shot :).

I was just telling my boyfriend how I wanted to just buy a flip phone and have an old ipod to have access to my music and basic things and that's it. I was wondering the logistics of it until I saw Eddy make a video about actually doing it and its made me also realize just how unplesant my life has been because of things I've seen and allowed to happen just through a phone. I think a lot of us looking to take a step back because of how out of control we've let it become. I've also recently just finished flowers for Algernon and it is truly one of the best books I could have read in my life, I am so glad to see it getting mentioned here.

Videos like these are the millenial equivalent of those boomer cartoons where the kid goes "a book? How do you click on it?". Yes, phone makes you sad. Studies were done years ago proving this, and some of us did something about it. I guess what we should have done is wait a few more years while being sad the whole time and then make a 45 minute long video about doing something about it. I'm a minute in and I cannot imagine having so little to do that I listen to almost an hour of dollar store Marc Maron belaboring the oldest, most obvious commentary on modern technology. Can't wait for the section where he talks about taking to other people instead and community!

I genuinely cannot imagine it being such a big deal in your life to delete twitter and all other " fun " phone apps and just be normal that you make a video about it
