In the US you have to take your ATM card out of the machine before it will give you cash. Not so in SE Asia. Very easy to get your cash & walk away without your card.

My stomach dropped when you mentioned leaving your bank card in the machine. I’ve never traveled in a place exactly like this, but I’ve had a similar experience in a foreign city where I forgot to grab my suitcase from overhead storage before stepping out of the metro car. Lots of important stuff in there, and I’d only just arrived. Didn’t know the language or customs.

I’ll never forget the feeling of realizing I’d forgotten it. I’ll also never forget the feeling when I miraculously got the bag back after scrutinizing train routes and schedules and managing to intercept it later that day.
