My flashlight is about the size of a D battery, pumps out 4200 lumens, and can set paper on fire from an inch away with ONLY the light from it. OBVIOUSLY it only uses UNREGULATED cells since it hogs about 20 amps, and the whole head jumps to 150f in seconds b4 thermal regulation kicks in.

Safety is critical, but whats required changes as you have experience and know what you are doing.

I like having the option for extreme brightness when outdoors or investigating a noise at night, but i definately just use the 30-150 lumen mode for 99% of the time.

Whats most important is getting a flashlight you like, feel safe using, and is easy to take everywhere. Because a flashlight doesnt work unless its in your pocket when u need it.

who the F^%$ is afraid of a flashlight seriously??? Never heard of a death or injury from a flashlight, but why not put the meme out there and scare the sheep.

My "normal" job is a overnight security at a large Medical Facility that closes at night. I currently use the NiteCore EDC27. My other job is search and rescue which I use numerous types of lights.

I have so many issues with a lot of what you said but for the sake of brevity and to save my fingers typing on my tablet I will only focus on what you say about 5 to 100 being basically all you need unless you're in rescue or such.
There's plenty of instances that require a person to have brighter flashlights for everyday use. Quite a few people have vison problems or conditions that require them brighter flashlights for what some people would consider "bright enough". Even times in which a certain brightness in a floodligh is enough they could still have conditions in which a higher lumin/brightness is required to see more around them in the dark as their condition can affect their peripheral vision, so even though in front of them it's bright enough for them they could still require brighter still to see to a normal comfort around them.
These situations are clearer to me as i have vision problems on my mother's side and i see this first hand.

Also, comparing the AA in the Fenix to the Olight 18650 is completely disingenuous. You should consider comparing a 14500 to a AA considering they’re often close in capacity. Please learn what you’re talking about.

This is the dumbest shit I have ever heard. You make it sound like people dying from a flashlight explosion is an epidemic. It isn’t. You stand a better chance of dying from a bus hitting you.

The best flashlight is the one I'm holding in my hand right now. It has 9 led, metal case, and is as big as the 3 AAA batteries that are included inside. It costs only 1 euro. It's not water or shock proof, but it works. I can keep it dry by putting it in my pocket or bag.

I've been carrying the Nitecore TINI 2 on my keychain for around 18 months. Aside from some finish wear, it's still working great. It throws a great even light, and it holds a charge for quite a long time when not in use. Plus USB-C charging is great, since I'm never far from a USB-C charger.

Multiple cells is the only thing I agree with you on this video but lifepo4 would solve this issue as long as you never completely drain them, as for death by flashlight or rather lithium ion cells, who has died? Burns sure, but death?

Protection of cells I avoid them at all costs, unprotected cells and it's your job to not completely drain them. Simply don't buy a voltage meter or invest in an anduril flashlight 3 clicks for battery voltage

Never let your lithium cells drop below 3.2v ideally the moment it drops below 3.6v or around 30% batteries hate being depleted past 30% remaining

Follow that simple rule, protected cells are a waste of money, and if you do rely on them, deplete them and the safety mechanism kicks in killing the cell until from even being used

Its funny the most common flash light to blow up is the Olight.
It would be beneficial to show American made lights that have actual. quality and durability. Cloud Defensive, Mode light, Surefire, Malcolf.

I carry a RovyVon Aurora A5x (I think) and I do use one of the higher output modes (which has a few hundred lumens I believe) from time to time. I work in a theatre so there are times when I need to illuminate large, dark spaces and those extra lumens are super useful. However, a big downside of this flashlight being so small and being capable of so much output is that it won't keep up the high output modes for long, it'll switch to a lower output to prevent overheating. But that's a tradeoff I can live with for it being so small that I can take it anywhere.

Another consideration is luminous flux (in lumens) and its relationship with luminous intensity (in candela), which is associated with how focused the beam is. Luminous flux describes the total amount of light coming from the flashlight in all directions, whereas luminous intensity describes how much light there is concentrated in a given angle in space.
Thus, if the flashlight has a very large beam angle, the light gets spread out over this large angle, so a flashlight with the same amount of lumens but a smaller beam angle is going to have that light spread out over a smaller angle, making the light appear more concentrated and thus brighter. So if you have two flashlights with the same number of lumens, the one with lower candela is going to have that light more spread out whereas the one with higher candela is going to be more focused.
If you want to illuminate an object with both, it's going to look dimmer when illuminated with the low candela flashlight because that flashlight lights up more of the surrounding area with the same amount of luminous flux (total light output), so there's less left for the object.

Awesome video; however, I still find myself lost in options. If you, Maurice, or anyone reading for that matter, has a "this-the-one" recommendation for someone looking for a tiny, self-defense flashlight for urban environments that is under 100 CAD (although I could budget up if absolutely needed since this a question of safety), I would sincerely appreciate it!

it looks like you do know your flashlights so this should be easy question for you, Which flashlight with 18650 battery has illuminated switch button in off position like BLF Q8? And does any of them have illuminated switch button changing color as a battery indicator when the battery is getting depleted in off position? It would be a great help.
Thank you.

I found myself disagreeing with almost every point you've made here. I am squarely in the enthusiast category of flashlight users.
1. Multi cell lights: I am a grown up, I can handle being responsible for batteries. I don't want to be limited to a single 18650 or 21700 for every single lighting task in my life. If you can pump the gas into your own car you can handle matching cells and voltage before using a multi cell light.
2. Protected batteries, proprietary cells and built in charging. I despise proprietary cells, they are bad for the user in every single way. I stray away from companies that require them. I have multiple dedicated chargers for lithium batteries that can control charging amperage and voltage cutoffs. Every single light that I use has reliable low voltage protection. I don't use built in charging because it adds bulk, possibly for water and dust ingress and proprietary charging standards. There are specific use cases for built in charging that I do like though, such as in the acebeam x75 or noxtigon k1.
3. You never mentioned the best part of flashlights. The light that they output. I want a light that has high cri (color rendering index) good tint (doesn't make things look green) and warmer color temperatures.
4. User interface. It's the make or break of a flashlight for me and many others. I want a UI that can be customized to exactly what I want. Something like anduril or Zebralight UI. There are times where I want more out of a light than just three modes and a mediocre strobe.
5. A flashlight is not a defense system. Don't rely on 1k lumens to do anything to someone.

Tldr: get a emisar d4k with nicha 519a emitters and a boost driver. Cheaper than an olight and you will actually enjoy using it.
