Emissions arising from making building materials have recently come to be recognized as a leading driver of climate change globally. The recent EMBARC (Emissions of Materials Benchmark Assessment for Residential Construction) study helps define the issue for home building in the GTHA. Based on a sample size of over 500 as-built homes the study is the largest of its kind and establishes that material-related emissions from new low-rise homes are at least 1 million tonnes per year.

This presentation summarizes the findings of the report, from high-level impacts across the region down to material replacement suggestions at the level of individual homes, showing how regulation of material emissions could bring about immediate reductions of 250,000 tonnes per year and could drive the sector to become carbon neutral in the next decade and carbon positive before 2050.

Find out how developers, home designers, builders, energy advisors and homeowners can become part of the climate solution in a practical, affordable and pragmatic way.
