I knew it was Bach.
I never realized until this incident how hard it is to play this melody from memory.

a (simple) nevertheless a long flowing legato song like melody that soothes the soul. spiritual
after more research it appears that
1. the tune set to "Jesu Joy of man's desiring" lyrics was composed by Johann Schopp
2. Bach did the harmony, (the opening theme) which in itself is a long melodic sequence (and to me more melodious). it is hard to distinguish which is the theme here.
