my husband came up elevation in early 80s when in kaikoura.with dfs.if heavy had banker engine at the rear.

Kaitaki sailing on, and the grunt of twin DXs with their 34 crossing total up that Waitohi Viaduct. . .

How cheap the skates are there in NZ. Come on MF's. Add two more engines at the front end and four more at the rear. Jog it home instead of blowing gaskets at every run.

This keeps being a great point to watch trains, this video shows well.
In 2011 I had my campervan parked up on the patch of grass closest to the camera, can you imagine the sound of two DXes working their way up to elevation during the night?
It was a very welcome interruption of my sleep twice a night which lasted for 20 minutes, sound fading in and out as the train wound around the hills.

Don't care what else could pull that load up the hill, it is the sound of those DX's working that is music to the ears. Have seen very long trains leaving Picton station with DX's at night and the sound reverberating off the hills as it climbs to the viaduct is awesome. Long live the DX - just something about them.

I was the LE on that job,1599tons it wasn't struggling at all just laying sand as to prevent wheelslip.If it was raining yes it would of been a struggle.

i doubt a DL could do it their is virtual no run up to this incline no chance to gain any speed at all
