I had this video in the Watch Later PL for the better part of 2 years (for the record I watched all of these videos on release), and today, planets finally alligned for me to watch the whole thing. It is hypnotic to see how a console maker went so high and fell so hard. Here's to XBOX making a come back

To this day, I still think the original Xbox design is one of the best designs in video game history. I know people didn't like that it was huge, but that's exactly what I loved about it. It didn't look like a console. To me it always looked like a computer that was trying to look like a console. And when you opened it up, it was basically just a Pentium III computer with a few other hardware additions to make it behave more console. My only real complaint is that $30 dongle that you had to get to play DVDs. But knowing the history behind its development I understand why it was an add-on.

The 2008 console is a jasper and the red ring problem was solved by then.

I grew up with the 360 and all of its weird add ons, so this is like a weird timeline of my childhood.

My machine survived 3 red rings before we had to trade it in for a newer black model with kinect

My old ass 360 recently RROD. I thought it was a goner, but then I opened it up and realized it was just some capacitors that started leaking. I replaced them all and now she's back like never before. I guess the ones after 2008 are way more reliable than we give them credit for.

Props for them using PSB Stratus bookshelf speakers in their ad. At least the commercial had one product that didn’t have a high mortality rate and was made in the United States 😂. Also Mad World should always be a Donnie Darko reference, as much as I love Gears of War that movie came first

I would really love to know why the Xbox needed to be a media center. It should have been a feature- not the thing.

I remember my buddy going through like 3 or 4 and just had a stack of dead consoles between him and his brother 😅. I also remember another friend having someone cut open the top of their console and stick a pc fan in it lol

The main RROD cause (GPU Failure) is due to a design flaw within the GPU itself. The TG underfill within the GPU that surrounds the solder bumps wasn't high enough and allowed the solder bumps to flex and crack, breaking the connection. The revised GPUs started appearing in mid to late 2008, your Falcon, if it does have gpu failure, would have been one of the very last production runs of faulty GPUs. If you get the secondary error code, press and hold sync and press eject 4 times, you can find out what the issue is

Had to rewatch this with the recent Xbox news. It's insane how much more it feels like they're floundering in comparison to PlayStation and especially Nintendo. The Xbox One launch was an omen, and we just didn't know it yet.

My 360 Core still hasn’t red ringed, but the disc drive ejector has failed and required a new belt and gear

"I wish the 'Ring' had never came to me, I wish none of this happened" perhaps now it seems fitting that Xbox is back almost to the same sales levels it was before the curse nearly killed it, because the PS5 does not take physical games, while the 500 dollar series X and 300 dollar Series S disc based variant (availible for special orders on amazon?) do accept disc from some xbox, xbox 360, and all Xbox one games (exception goes to early kinect based games that never fully materialized nor sold too much)

To the dude complaining about the fan, clean the fan numbnuts. The fan is only loud if it's dirty or the heatsink needs to be replaced.

I think it's pretty stupid to judge blueray sales on how much DVD's are on the shelves of Walmart in the US when PS3 and bluerays in general were much popular outside US

I for one was happy to see digital prevail over disks. As someone that witnessed Sony's attempts repeatedly to create a format monopoly (at far higher royalties screwing the end user) I knew Sony couldn't be allowed to strongarm the format through. Betamax were more expensive than VHS. They wanted higher royalties from CDs. Minidisks were stupidly more expensive than CDs, and they wanted higher royalties from DVD. To this day Blu-rays cost more than DVD while literally costing the same to produce, which is exactly why Blu-ray never overtook DVD.

That's why Xbox lost the console war because Microsoft tried to sell gamers tv and not games where as Sony is all about gamers, games and a good overall gaming experience.

What frustrates me about the whole ordeal is that this happened really recently yet the news reporter lady called it a "hot new toy" she must have gotten confused with the big purple vibrator she leaves on her nightstand.

The Kinect has never worked very well in my bedroom also because my walls are green. It thinks my entire room is like a green screen and everything disappears.
