Would there be any benefit to running a dedicated machine from the era, vs just using your modern PC to run PCEM and DosBOX? I've been messing with the EXODOS collection which has all the 90s DOS games accurately setup for a ready to play experience, and they all run as good as I remember. Haven't messed with PCEM yet but from what I've seen, it does the same for Win95/98 era gaming.

I really enjoyed the video bringing me back to my old games...Finally I use an emulator called PCem. I use Windows95C, 450mhz Pentium II, RAM at 512MB, Graphics Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 (S3ViRGE) with a Voodoo Sidecard with2x 4mb for 3dfx purposes, SB16 and two HDD at 4gb.
Well I am really happy with this setup. It runs all my original Software so far. And most of them from ISO or Cue which I made for safety reasons.
DOS runs with configured configs.sys and autoexec.bat at startup, so I can choose for simple Himem, EMM RAM, EMM Extended, or it just run into windows 95
DOS works well with Vesa support, or with 3fdx by the Voodoo add-on.
Have fun

I see you have that 1 game I have that refuses to run on any GPU newer than the GeForce 4 series - STAR TREK DS9 : Dominion Wars 😲 I tried everything to get that running on my newer systems on various occasions with no luck - I eventually built a Shuttle XPC with an old AMD Duron, GeForce 4 TI4200 and win XP (I think it's XP) but it didn't look nice on my Acer X34A monitor 😒 I'll have to get a CRT 👍👍

I just bought an old used win 2000 computer (waiting for it). Is it correct that most games for the win95/98 would be able to play on the win2000?

Most of the time 3D acceleration just does not work with VM. Because none of VM actually has access to the real hardware. That being said, newest version of QEMU now allows GPU passthrough which basically gives a abstration access of the hardware from the VM.

However, many older games rely on CPU clock speed, Voodoo graphics and so on. Modern graphics card and CPU are just way too much powerful to give these games what they'd expect from back in 90's. If one doesn't have a real hardware, what I'd suggest is PCem. PCem emulates the original hardware that these games expect and gives a nice enviornment for retro gaming. Do note that PCem sometimes doesn't work properly and you may have to do some tricks to make it work.

Also, thanks for the video! it's really AMAZING!

Just curious why you wouldn't use something like a virtual machine. Much cheaper, less power consumption, more reliable, less space taking, less wires, less plugs. All around better option, it seems.

I have an AMD K7-600 with a voodoo 3 2000. I love this machine but it needs some checkup because it shuts down at random moments and doesn't want to boot again for like half an hour. The other problem with this system is finding a correct psu. Because these old systems have special requirements which aren't met by modern power supply units.

Hey Man, I was thinking of asking you an interesting question about a Windows 2000 game with Quake 1 Engine called "Urban Mercenary".... Because in the Windows 2000 I once had I could see a playable map (all white I think for a reading code) and the lights became white hanging on the ceiling and with the grate, while now that map is always the same, but original gray and brown with blue lights? In the past not too long ago, I had tried to play the second version of the game on another PC with Windows XP from running .rar files, and a similar thing happened making my whole map blank but without merging or manipulating objects, this was on the last map, but since I've always had another Windows XP (fixed), and I still play both versions, I don't understand why this reading method doesn't come out also from my Windows XP PC (laptop ), where the textures are colored... It's not like you can help me, my goal is to make the first white map reappear with the lights hanging, I also remember in 2005 that at the end of the map the screen was rotated, do you think it was of a reading error, was it a map taken from the internet (although I remember never playing on the internet in 2005), or is it the windows version? I beg you for years I've been trying to find a solution! 🙏🏻

I love GOG. I haven't played on my old gaming pc from 2004 in over a decade. I finally got rid of it last year. It chewed through power supplies of all things. Watching this made me kind of regret my choice.. but I can still play most of my old games through emulators now.

MetalJesus, Happy New Year! Been a fan for years! This is my first-ever comment. I'm a retro gamer, but only on consoles. Recently, I got a hankering to play an old PC favorite from 1997, Blood, by Monolith Productions. I did what I always do and sought out an original copy. Now that I've got it, I don't know what my next move should be. Do I buy a modern PC and figure out how to run it on that? Or do I buy a 1997 PC like I had back in the day? There's at least one other PC game I'd love to revisit, Clive Barker's Undying from 2001. In what direction would you recommend I go? Budget is a consideration.

Don't get me wrong, but you should have used a VGA TNT 2 that already supported 32-bit colors, Voodoo 3 only supports 16-bit, despite being a little faster than the NVIDIA card. The Need or Speed he played, for example, supports 32-bit color. Ahhh, great content, thank you.
