For such a small car, the Smart Fortwo offers good safety. They don't have the big crumble zone a mid size car has so the deceleration will be very fast which means that there is not much force absorbed so your body has to absorb a lot of force. But the cage is really strong so people won't get de-legged, in this case, with such a small car, Mercedes made a very good decision to make the cage so stiff. They are a hell lot less lethal than other, bigger cars around there. This is why the smart car is rated so high at Euro NCAP.

Four weeks ago a grandma in a 3 series BMW pulled out from behind a lorry and hit us head on in an identical way to this video. The combined impact speed was just over 100 mph. Our Smart for Two was a write off but my wife and I staggered away. We are bruised to hell but we lived. The tridion cage and retracting steering wheel saved my and her lives. To anyone thinking of buying a small car I say - do not scrimp. The Mercedes tech on this little car is unmatched.

and that folks is real-world physics in action. the much heavier mercedes speed was slowed, but it continued to move forward at a slower velocity. the lighter smart car immediately began to move backwards. the G forces of going from +30mph to +5mph (net -25mph) in the the mercedes is about half of the G force of going from 30mph to - 15mph (net -45mph) in the smart car. that G force is what causes whiplash and spinal trauma.

Hey, this test wasn't as bad as some of the real crashes I've seen the smart cars in. Their tiny wheelbase tends to lead to a lot of spinning, which actually ejects the driver from the car at speed. Not a fun way to go, I imagine.

What a stupid test. The Mercedes would have failed just as miserably if crashed against an identical Mercedes C class. This was a one-off test used to scare consumers into continuing buying larger vehicles that require higher insurance premiums. The IIHS is funded by auto insurance companies.

Small cars are for stupid people so they don’t live as long. And what’s funny is it’s always the small econo cars that are covered in dents because the retards that own them cannot drive for shit.
