A bit of an observation: Iron Liches are suprisingly mobile, they will follow you and can get through closed doors (at least the common ones). On one hand a pain in the neck, on the other hand you can lure them in E4M1 from the pit to the room before it where they became stuck and you can get around them without need of killing them (I tried to lure them to the crusher but they have problem with stairs), or in E4M2 they are easily lured from the exit hall to the main area, which is either good for infighting or more maneuverability when killing them (I like to exploit them with teleporters). Ophidians fire like crazy and is relatively easy to get them infight.

They DID make a generation of children fall in love with realistic weapons and become NRA members, which is a major contributor to the epidemic levels of gun violence our nation is experiencing.

Instead of fistfights at school or in road rage incidents, we have shootings, because guns are close at hand almost everywhere in America.

I clearly remember playing the demo of this game, with came with that 70 games cd rom, and only had the first map, you cant touch this game

I found this game to be much more palatable with the Brutal Heretic mod. Weapon fire looks nicer and they also don't sound like ass. Mobs still do, but they also come apart in the most satisfying ways, blood and gibs everywhere.


Fair warning though, this mod fucks with the game balance in strange ways, from what i've noticed so far:
- you don't get any hitscan weapons, even wand shots now have travel time
- you can carry over your items from map to map Hexen style, for the maximum of 16 iirc
- ghost skellybros replaced with ghosts of warrior from Hexen
- there's a leveling system, it appears to only affect your max hp
- infernal staff runs out of ammo almost instantly, i suspect a bug

the game doesnt really have a ''bfg'' it just has 2 different miniguns.

I never managed to find the trigger that opened up the secret level in episode 1, but I was able to use the wand to hit an enemy that is visible between all the low openings to said secret area. Once I hit one, I walk to the end opposite of the secret door (lures him to there), then walk to the secret door, where the monster opens it, and that's how I got to E1M9.

If ever a game needed the BFG-9000, it's this one.

I played this game before I played Doom. Heretic was the second FPS game I ever played. The first was Operation Body Count. The shareware versions were both on a shareware game compilation CD I had for my PC back in 1996 or 1997.

I chose Body Count first because it showed a preview photo in which you could tell it was an FPS. It was cool at first because I didn’t know any better; I had never played this type of game before. I ended up annoyed with it when I could not figure out where to go.

I ended up not trying out Heretic for awhile because it didn’t have a preview photo and no description of the game. When I did try to play it, it wouldn’t work. I finally got it to work and once I did, I couldn’t stop playing it. I finally found the game for me.

I still think I like Heretic more than Doom to this day even though I know Doom is more iconic and better designed. But to me, Doom will always be a “Heretic-clone”.

I love this game. Play it to this day. Nostalgia or no, i think it is great!

Holy shit I just realized something. As far as fps games for me this came before doom lol. I played zero tolerance on Sega first. On pc though it was island of Dr radiaki first, then this and doom a few days later

Instantly those sounds bring back memories. Great to see it all. Shame you can’t get this on PS. A time when games would last a good long while.

Loved the environments (helped growing up in the country, surrounded with stone castles, churches etc, and Robinhood on tv; a game that resonated olde times). And the new stuff to learn since Doom.

I like to think of boomer shooters as reverse tower defense games, where the monsters are trying to stop you.

Saberclaws are a joke until you open that ONE closet. You know the one. The kind of trap that is easy to deal with when you expect it but often ends up with you getting shafted when you don't.
