Why are people NOT buying raw LiFePO4 cells?

Too much hassle and not that much cheaper to put with the hassle and lack of warranty?

If I would make an off grid installation I would pretty much need a 1000kWh system to get through the 4 winter months, if I buy a complete installation it's way too expensive to even consider it a little bit.

Same goes for a full DIY system and it costs a lot of time and effort, and more risc.

For the smaller diy systems it's cheaper if your time is worthless.

People are not buying it because its unreasonably expensive.

It's still cheaper to build a 24s 72v pack wth JK Bluetooth BMS with active balancing than it is to buy 2 of the already built 36v packs ...

I dunno brother, Just placed an order for 48 grade A EVE 304ah batteries, double post terminals, flex bus bars and cell separator sheets delivered for 5k. 50 days out but works out perfect for me. I won't be ready for them before then. Coming from someone I'm sure you know and trust already.
No server rack batteries within a mile of that.

Quick question. If I take 2, 6VDC batteries rated at 465AH each and connect them for 12VDC, will that double the AH's ? making them over 900?

The only reason I look at cells anymore is when I fantasize about making aDC fast charger out of either a 240 or 300 volt battery. I never get past finding a BMS that would work. I'm sure I could manage finding either a charge controller or a charger for the battery. The dream is to let the battery charge either with solar or regular house current and charger through the day and then have a fast charger run off the battery.

These batteries are high quality! A 200 amp lithium should be priced at around $12,000 a piece. 1 and 2 k is too cheap. The manufacturer makes only a few cents profitability on these units.

Back then they were about 65 euro per cell!

Why aren't people buying raw cells?
Well $900 for 4 cells is a pretty good start.
Considering I can buy a full battery for a fraction of that.

There are so many battery companies out there now, how do you know what inside? I’ve seen cheap B cells, soft cells. At least when you build your own, you know what you got.

buying anything through your affiliates is a bad idea. i can get 4 280wh eve grade a cells for 400€

One year later and the points brought up in this video are even more true. I have procrastinated long enough before buying my raw cells that now I can't justify not getting the plug and play warrantied option of a server rack battery. Now the only thing stopping me is that the other equipment I want for my system only comes in 12v versions. Looking ay you "Blue Box" people. Make that flagship hybrid 50A inverter in a 48 volt option and they would fly off the shelves. Conversely, if the "power wall" type inverters could offer some of the hybrid options available in the blue box, I would consider changing my shopping list.

Prices went down a lot it seems. I can buy 4 304AH grade a EVE cells for 430 euro's, about 500 usd. a 15kwh 48 build inc bms is less than 2000euro atm.

If you could explain drift and maybe some other terms for non electro guys, please.

280ah batteries ??? that would be 145 of my ryobi power tool batteries .

I just got 32 grade A EVE 280K amp hour cells for $111 from Docan Power

Here in Europe I can get an EVE 305ah cell from a local distributor for about 120$, thats about 12 cent per wh. A server rack battery is 1600$ for 5kwh so about 32 cents per wh. Its a no brainer still over here especially for large systems ie 50kw+ of solar.

Some of the data I’ve seen for this chemistry is cold charging and discharging degrades the battery pretty quickly such that at 0C 32F you lose 25% capacity after only a few hundred cycles.

Good vlog post, Will! I have an interesting question: Have you done a projected cost study lead acid batteries vs. lithium batteries over the lifetime of the batteries. I would really like know the estimated cost of each kWh of the different types of batteries over their projected lifespan. Im trying to build a street vacuum cleaner , what kind of battery would power it. Its sort of like a shop vac on steroids.

Just to add to this video, i bought my first 280Ah EVE in 2020 and i'm about to buy a second one, i got the same price as in 2020... ! 98€ per cell delivered, that is pretty intreresting, that's 1750€ all included, BMS, DIY box and fuse : for 14kWh.

If you put together a diy 16 cell 48 volt battery bank with grade A eve cells, how important is compressing the cells together? What is the best way to do that and how tight do you restrict their compression? Also, what happens if you don't compress them?

Because they are fkin dangerous for the layman. And Lithium based batteries are getting a bad face on the media.

Eh here in the UK it's double the price for a server rack battery, so I would love to just buy a server rack battery, but with the difference in money being enough to buy a MPPT charge controller and a 3000W inverter... Yeh gonna have to build my own battery. £560 for 5.89Wh which is slightly more than a server rank battery, ~£100 for the charge controller so £660 vs £1200+ for 5.1kWh.

That is with smaller B grade cells, but as long as it lasts me even half as long it's fine.

I want to build 48v high capacity batteries from cells like this, my issue is the BMS, i'm having trouble finding BMS's that are closed loop communication capable with the EG4 inverters i've been looking at, I still plan to build one for my 48v ryobi zero turn mower next year when the warranty expires.

I would also add the reason you are likely seeing a drop in sales could be because your US distributors are insanely overpriced 18650batterystore and Docan's Texas Facility are in the 15-20 cents per Watt for the EVE cells when bought directly off their websites, for example, 16 280ah Eve cells on 18650 are $2,000+ shipping on the website you link to it's $3,156 + shipping for the same cells, With shipping from your seller is $3,252 from 18650 (even with their higher shipping) it's about $2,200 and Docan is $1,776 from us stock, this is a fraction the cost of your link, which makes them more viable to DIY.

I would be interested in your thoughts on using a server rack battery in a 48V golf cart.

A thought about balancing.
I saw your like to raw cells in pack of 4 that are matched. I have seen you showed balancer for 4 cells on a 12v pack.
But in case I want to build my own pack of 24v or 48v, is there balancer for 8 cells (24V) or 16 cells (48V)?
Or is there master balancer that can balance several 12v pack's in series?

There may be some who want several lead gel (or acid) 12v batteries in series in a pack.
For example my lead gel scooter (E-max 110s) 48v didn't come with a balancer, and that killed my batteries.

They are 80$ to 100$ per cell not 220$ and it 8c per wh since new cells are around 310ah not 280 now.

Imo the thing is that mainstream is buying batteries now instead of the early adopter who are fine with diy. Prices of serverrack battery is totally out of wack if you add up the components. People are being ripped off, but they don’t know it, so sellers can get away with it.

Maybe people enjoy their hobby and dont want premade stuff.

What BMS do you recommend for a 12v or 24v camper?
