Let the kid play it in e-flat. Miles is the host as far as I’m concerned.

Why suggesting another key is harsh?😮

Miles gave genuine advice. There are millions of amateur musicians out there who sound ok, but not great. A musician can hear the quality of their sound and honesty with themself will inform what practice is needed. He then told the kid a specific tip to guide - play Eb. You’re playing D, transcribe all the notes to Eb (1/2 step higher). The kid looked at the page to remember if it’s written in D. Miles knows this is standard, and is telling him to KNOW the music so intimately you can play it 1/2 step higher than written. EXCELLENT practice technique to truly grasp the music and play musically, rather than simply what you’re told on the page. Musician to musician, this honest feedback is invaluable from legends like Miles Davis. If Miles was polite, he would have shorted the kid of a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn the approach from someone who truly knows music.

Please help me here. When Miles says “Eb”, does he mean play the song in concert Eb and play F on trumpet, or playing it in concert C# playing Eb on trumpet?

I don’t see anything wrong with this, this is how our grandparents used to talk. They were blunt and didn’t tell any lies. I bet that kid went home and practiced and changed the key like he was told and he saw a big difference

"He know how he sounds, he needs to practice". The advice Bird kept giving Miles and he's still practicing.

I think Miles did, in fact, mean his comment as a compliment. If he was just criticizing, I don't think he would've been so vague about it. The host's reaction very much obscures this. That's the part of this video that really sticks out. That guy is about as hip, as my shoulder.

That was a great show of respect towards the kid. Treated him as a musician instead of a child.

Sometimes it is not about what you say but how you say it. It is fine if he believes that the kid should practice more, but it would have been nice if he was more specific. Should he practice intonation, inflection, dynamics, expression etc? It would not have been a helpful comment for me personally and yes his response could have been more gentle but stern at the same time.

Something similar happened to the first tenor player in my college jazz band years ago.

We went to an adjudicated festival for big bands, I forget where. Our director gushed about how we’d be adjudicated by Rufus Reid, a “legend” who played with all the “cats” back in the day. All of this is true now and was true then. But we never saw our director stan a musician like that before. Clearly, Rufus’s opinion mattered alot to him. And it started to rub off on the rest of us.

We got to the auditorium to rehearse, and Rufus Reid was there, observing. (Our rival school had just finished their rehearsal. They stuck around to hear us, on some “Bring It On” nonsense-a carryover from marching band season.) We played through a couple charts, to “warm up” (and by “warm up”, I mean “the band director was star struck and wanted to impress Rufus”). The first tenor player had a couple of solos, along with others in the band.

After our rehearsal, Rufus walked to the stage to complement us and give feedback. He addressed the band, “you guys sound great”. He pointed at the 1st trumpet, “you sound great! He pointed at to 2nd trumpet, “you sound great!” (fwiw they were both very good. And I knew the 1st trumpet player in HS. He was good then too.) Then Rufus looked at the 1st tenor player, without missing a beat-as you would expect from a legendary jazz bassist, he pointed, “and you, you need to practice!”

😯🫢😂

Bro got ROASTED roasted on the van ride back to school.😂🤣😭

Bro was never the same after that. Before Rufus, he bopped around campus with his neck-strap on and a reed in his mouth 24/7. After Rufus, he moped around campus, head down, and kept to himself. His solos got slightly better during the last several weeks of the semester. But if I remember correctly, I don’t think he came back the next semester either. I certainly don’t remember seeing him after that semester.

At age 20, I felt, “well SOMEBODY had to tell him.” Now, with some years of hindsight and maturity, I hope he got out of his funk and used that experience as motivation to be his best.
