I would not recommend DazStudio, it is free and good, but the terms they have is very restrictive and the company is very aggressive, I asked if I could use it to make a pose for a character used in a game I used to make custom snapshots/images they just answered no and banned me, so you can not use that program to make characters or poses to ant game or VR, not even if you made the character and only use Daz to pose the figure

NURBS...I haven't heard that name in years! I am glad to see the 3D world providing avenues for more accessibility. I remember the days of development when we had to have dongles for licensing per seat. UGH! Great stuff man!

"This time we did not include several applications that haven’t been updated in several years, such as Wings3D,..." Wings3D is in active development! I use it daily =D

Blender, Vectary, SculptGL, Spline, Womp 3D. These are my favourite for free use. But there are so many to choose from!

If you've touched CAD and CAD-like software there is DesignSpark Mechanical and FreeCAD as well, first one is very easy, less than 1h and you are ready to go for quite nice modeling. Second might be bit less user friendly but is quite powerful

One additional thing you have to take into account when looking at DAZ is the licensing. They basically only allow you to create stuff for yourself and non-commercial. If you want to use it for anything be it 2D (prints or artwork for pay) or 3D (printing 3D or CNC) OR using it in Game Engines (Interactive or 3D animated), you will pay between 15 and 100 dollars for a license.

Given the BSP-to-static mesh feature and modeling plugins, I'd throw Unreal Engine onto the list too. The BSP modeling alone doesn't get enough love, despite all of the useful customization settings. Hell, apply Megascans surface materials and those models could really shine.
