Objectively, league looks much worse than dota. What you're talking about is that in strategy games it's actually better to look worse at times. This is why some dota players like RTZ actually play on lower graphics settings to see the abilities more clearly rather than all the subtle visual effects that are unneeded.

It also just speaks to the fact that you don't know what the dota abilities are so you get confused. When I watch league I see the same jumbled mess of nonsense just in a game that looks like it was made in 1998.

It's interesting how the quest for a hyperreal experience has players hating things like motion blur, bokeh (selective focus), lauding 3 digit refresh rates, 8K resolution when reality is nothing like that. The brain is very effective at both extracting info from an imperfect scene and also extapolating info so that we don't see the gaps. We think we know what that involves but we don't. We get stiffies when we read the specs of a new piece of hardware or a game, wow HOW many pixels? Twice the frame rate - wow that's twice the fun right? There is a massive disconnect between what an enjoyable video game experience is and what we think it should involve. This is why gamers have parodoxically never been so well-catered for and yet so damn angry at the same time.

It's amazing how bad some games can look when you see them 20 years later. At the time, they seemed hi res, amazing and modern...

Dota v League was a bad example imo. League is full of so much visual noise whenever a fight breaks out, especially if certain skins are involved. To me it is always easier to tell what is going on in Dota.

Video game graphics these days are just so unneccessary, like visually its great but I'm not playing them so I can experience real life when its AROUND ME already and get screwed because I can't tell which is the enemny or just the environment, I'm astonished that people can somehow tell the difference between an npc enemy and their environment which in most cases looks identifical. I will never understand why people still strive for replicating modern warefare and combat into a video game, then people complain about camping players when thats the whole point of it is being strategic and getting an advantage over your enemy because of change of warefare over the past 100 years and its also, you know? Based in real life, which is going to be unfair and not fun for most people. Video games should in my opinion be entertainment, not trying to replicate something that majority of people can experience themselves in real life and is always going to be unfair regardless of how much video game devs try to balance it, its an inherent design that we cannot change because thats how real life combat and warefare works, its always unfair, harsh and traumatic for those who actually serve in their country's military. It is not entertaining.

One thing I appreciate about the 3D Mario games is that Mario’s shadow is always directly below him as a point of reference to where you’ll land, even in Odyssey which has more realistic graphics and shadows.

Lets be real, visual fidelity doesn’t need to be better than barely good enough to allow a game to be a masterpiece. It doesn’t have to add anything to the experience, and never really does either way, it just has to not detract from it. Putting into it anything more than necessary is a waste of limited resources that could have been used to actually make the game better.

Gex 64 had a record-setting 64 graphics, a monumental achievement in video game engineering at the time. But ultimately the gamers have spoken - games are not about how many graphics you have, but the SIZE of the graphics, and that's why Knack 2 became the greatest game of all time despite boasting a mere 2 graphics (ice-type graphics and the normal kind)

I'd say the obsession over graphics is actually down to the more serious consumers of games. Spending thousands on tech to make everything look as shiny and fancy and photorealistic as possible, game companies are obviously going to respond by trying to make everything as big and graphically cinematic as possible, even at the expense of gameplay.

Ok in defense of Arkham Asylum, Batman needs to be intimidating. Occupying a massive portion of the screen is the only way to emphasis that.
BOTW on the other hand, they wanted to make the world bigger by zooming out Link.

Well, the "Batman zone" is more of an artistic choice by Rocksteady. The camera shifts all the time in the Arkham games based on what you are doing.

Walking : "Batman zone"
Running : Camera pulls back a bit and Batman in in the centre of the screen
Stealth : Same pull back of camera, bit more this time to have greater FOV
Gliding : Camera shakes subtely while giving a wide view of the front
Combat : Camera gives view of the entire battlefield and lets the fluid combat system show off the most

Used to value graphic above everything else, now I need plot and immersion. The best games, the most important games I ever played, were mediocre when it came to graphics, but they made you think the thing on your screen is real and the characters are real people. Between FF7 and the remake, I'd choose the original clunky FF7 anytime.

I have a lower threshold for tolerance on graphics, but otherwise, I don't care about them. Good mechanics, little to no hand holding, good story, good music... those are the important things to me.
These days though, all the KIDS are crazy about the graphics... graphics don't make a game fun... unless it's lika... AO rated sex sim for VR or some shit 🤣
