I agree this should have been the ending. I dont know, it fits with her last dialogue and to think she knows how to manipulate malfunctioned systems, it would still make sense if she could have escaped like that.

In the stygian depths of cinematic artistry, where shadows entwine with eldritch imagination, lies the enigmatic gem known as "Underwater" (2020). A haunting tale of claustrophobic terror, this scintillating sci-fi thriller resonates with the echoes of H.P. Lovecraft's unfathomable worlds, evoking an era of old-style, gritty filmmaking that bewitches the soul.

Within this abyssal opus, a palpable sense of existential dread permeates every frame, ensnaring the viewer in a visceral dance of anxiety and awe. The narrative unfolds deep below the surface, within the cold embrace of the ocean's abyss, where a crew of intrepid explorers find themselves ensnared in a cosmic nightmare. Lovecraftian motifs intertwine with the film's pulsating heart, as the protagonists confront unspeakable horrors lurking beneath the depths, unveiling a malevolence that shatters the fragile façade of reality.

Like a symphony of dread, the film's visuals and atmosphere breathe life into Lovecraft's dark imaginings. The cinematography, suffused with an ethereal gloom, transports us to an otherworldly realm, where each frame is imbued with an oppressive sense of foreboding. The director's masterful command of lighting and set design creates a palpable sense of confinement and impending doom, reminiscent of the claustrophobic nightmares that have haunted Lovecraft's tales for generations.

The characters, vulnerable and flawed, evoke the spirit of Lovecraft's protagonists, navigating a maddening descent into the unknown. Their collective descent echoes the psychological disintegration of those who dare to gaze upon the cosmic horrors, teetering on the precipice of their sanity. Each actor delivers a mesmerizing performance, their faces etched with despair, their voices trembling with a haunting resonance that reverberates with Lovecraft's existential dread.

"Underwater" pays homage to Lovecraft's legacy while channeling the cinematic influences of yesteryear. It evokes the gritty essence of Ridley Scott's seminal "Alien" and the enigmatic depths of James Cameron's "The Abyss." This amalgamation of inspirations creates a spellbinding fusion, where the boundaries between science fiction and cosmic horror blur into an indistinguishable tapestry of terror.

Through the darkened corridors and labyrinthine passageways, the film's relentless pace drives us ever deeper into the abyss, exposing the fragility of human comprehension in the face of ancient cosmic entities. The narrative unfurls like the tendrils of a primordial nightmare, ensnaring our senses and captivating our imagination. It is a testament to Lovecraft's enduring influence that "Underwater" captures the spirit of his mythos, embracing the unknown and challenging the limits of our perception.

In the twilight realms of cinematic transcendence, "Underwater" (2020) emerges as a potent Lovecraftian homage, an eldritch voyage that invokes the dread of forgotten eons. It harkens back to a bygone era of filmmaking, weaving a tapestry of fear and wonder that lingers in the mind long after the credits roll. It is a testament to the enduring power of Lovecraft's cosmic horrors, and a delight for both devoted acolytes and unsuspecting seekers of cinematic enlightenment.

This movie was terrible I’m sorry the dialogue WAS cliche with no emotional attachment to any characters, while there is emotional moments, it simply is just ruined by the shitty script the writers conceived. Movie was a 4/10 because the deaths were interesting.

I just noticed that the scene showing the pod released is inconsistent in both the official ending and this alternate ending. The position of the tube from where the pod exited from should be Smith's, not Emily's or Norah's pods.

I prefer the original ending, because despite the fact I'm not a fan of the Cthulhu Mythos, what I've heard that the Great Old Ones, like Cthulhu, can cause madness and insanity to those who gaze upon them, so if Norah escapes, everyone would've thought she had gone mad as she told everyone that no one believes her.

I kinda prefer this one just from a logical standpoint. I mean it is definitely more hopeful. But the fact that the timer goes from 60 to 1 instantly was kinda off. Plus the part where cthulu is caught in the explosion before you see Stewart hit by the collapsing structure makes no sense. She would be impacted by the explosion first. And on that note it wouldn't be a collapsing structure that kills her. It would be the explosion which would atomize everything. Honestly the theatrical ending was kinda sloppy and clearly not the original ending.

This ending would make more sense to then make a sequel and even a trilogy. Kristen Stewart should have pushed for this ending to be the one in theaters so her character can come back in the sequel as a loved character and a bad ass. Killing her was not a good idea, her character was strong and vulnerable all at the same time, she suffered internal conflict and still proved to be resilient and worthy in a tough spot.
