There is no way I would trust this way for anything structural or critical in anyway. There is no guarantee the concrete has mixed properly. I dare you to get density imaging done, there is no way it would pass. Now doing it this way for a side walk or similar small less important job, then sure we can do this at your place but never mine, i want to be positive that it will look good, be strong, and last.

Where I live, you can get a concrete truck that mixes it on site, and on demand. So very little waste and a lot less work. You do need someone to know how to finish it, but I feel for you, that looked like a lot of hard, dirty work! p.s. Some contractors, if you aren't in a hurry will schedule you at the end of their pour with surplus for a reduced rate.

I tried a dry pour slab and it was the last time I’ll try that. Certainly don’t recommend. It’s impossible to finish the surface to a smooth polish. Also, tons of the aggregate shows through in a spotty uncontrolled looking way, not a nice even way. Worst of all the mix is questionable. The next day the slabs are still soft. All in all it wasn’t even that much easier. So it’s almost the same amount of work for a much worse product. It’s not that hard to mix concrete. I got fooled by an internet phenomenon. Take my advice and skip this.

Was this an April Fool’s gag? No PPE? Flip flops with an axe? Sprinkling water with no sense of whether there’s an adequate volume for the amount of powder cement? Sounds like a joke to me!

I cant believe you had the confidence to upload this. When you inhale cement dust it can literally harden in your lungs. By pouring the cement dust on the ground then using a hose you essentially just wettened the top layer. I give it a few months before you start seeing cracks. I hope you aren't planning to put a shed on it because then you are talking about a safety hazard.

How is this easier or better than just ordering a concrete truck to backup and tailgate pour your slab? You were at it ALL DAY. This would have taken 45mins to pour then an 1.5hrs to 2hrs to finish if you had just done it traditionally. So you saved $100 bucks on concrete. My time and the project quality is worth more.

I needed this before using 55 bags of paver gravel for my 8x8 square base for the 7x7 shed I just completed...dry pour 3.5" deep 64sqft area would take a lot of bags, even with adding a gravel base

Ya don’t use a trowel to level concrete in a slab. You use a screed board. Usually just a 2x4 fit DIYers. The screed spans from one side of the form to the other and is worked over the pad.
This method will work but there was no where near enough water out on it.

Quikrete Mixing instructions taken from a bag a Quikrete.
MIXING QUIKRETE: Concrete Mix can be mechanically mixed in a barrel type concrete mixer or a mortar mixer. Choose the mixer size most appropriate for the size of the job to be done. Allow at least 1 ft3 (28.3 L) of mixer capacity for each 80 lb (36.2 kg) bag of QUIKRETE Concrete Mix to be mixed at one time. For each 80 lb (36.2 kg) bag of QUIKRETE Concrete Mix to be mixed, add approximately 6 pt (2.8 L) of fresh water to the mixer. Turn on the mixer and begin adding the concrete to the mixer. If the material becomes too difficult to mix, add additional water until a workable mix is obtained. If a slump cone is available, adjust water to achieve a 2 in to 3 in (50 mm to 75 mm) slump. QUIKRETE Concrete Mix may also be mixed by hand. Empty concrete bags into a suitable mixing container. For each 80 lb (36.2 kg) bag of mix, add approximately 6 pt (2.8 L) of clean water. Work the mix with a shovel, rake or hoe and add water as needed until a stiff, moldable consistency is achieved. Be sure there are no dry pockets of material. Do not leave standing puddles of water. Final water content should be approximately 6 pt to 9 pt (2.8 L to 4.3 L) of water per 80 lb (36.2 kg) bag of concrete. For other bag sizes, use Table 2 to determine water content.

In inches, the typical "slump" of good structural concrete is about 3 or 4 inches. Mix the concrete until it is uniformly and thoroughly mixed and continue mixing for 2 or 3 more minutes to begin the process of hydration, which ultimately is what causes the concrete to harden.

Would i need to reinforce a slab for a pergola? It's not a ton of weight but some, nothing like a vehicle or anything though. The slab is going to be 30x10 but in 3 sections so 3 - 10x10's.

This method isn't used by professionals because it is dangerous and not structurally acceptable. Moisture content ,slump, mpa and temperature all determine the quality of the concrete strength, finish and longevity. You may have glanced over the destructions and seen a water quantity and mixing instructions, it would also give a psi or mpa number if you fail to follow the instructions you are ripping yourself off. Also any contact with your skin will cause alkaline burns and wetting it also stops the clouds of very harmful Portland cement being inhaled by you and the neighbours. Please look into it and take care of yourself when working with and cement based products.

Silicosis is a very real risk from breathing freshly fractured silica crystal. Be mindful and wear a good mask---especially if you do this for a living. Also, dry 'pouring' produces weak concrete. You can prove this with a single bag of concrete mix. Try it. Wait 30 days and then compare it with properly mixed concrete.

I'm no foundation expert or contractor, etc...but what happens in 6 months when the top layer begins to settle on the unpoured and uncompacted bottom layer? I did however just buy a home and paid attention to the home inspector when he showed me the huge crack and uneven foundation (of just the garage) from uncompacted soil. Sorry but this is probably going to ruin itself in a year or two if it wasn't compacted or atleast laid correctly. Was a good idea in theory, I get it. But contractors are out there for a reason.
