For , Islam, it doesnt not hate dogs, or pigs or any other animal. All animals are Allah's creations and they are useful.

In Islam, from the tradition of the prophet (pbuh) a dog's saliva is impure. Therefore if a dog licks you or you come in contact with a dog's saliva in some way, you should wash yourself. Because we have to pray five times a day, anything impure touching us should be washed off.

Having said that, there is nothing wrong in taking care of dogs,.or cats or any other animals. In fact in a hadith the prophet (pbuh) compare two women. One was very pious, used to pray a lot, another was a prostitute. Yet the prophet (pbuh) said to his companions that the prostitute will go to heaven and the pious woman to hell. When they asked him why, he said because the pious woman tied a cat up so that it could not go and get a drink. And the prostitute found a thirsty ailing dog and she took care of it. Because Allah lives all his creatures and mercy is His trait, this woman despite being a sinner was forgiven by Allah, and the other woman had all the appearance of the goodness, but no mercy in her heart.

So all animals are our sacred duty as human beings. Including dogs.
