wasn´t the difficulty to program quite universal to the 5th gen consoles. People of cause talking about PS1 as the obvius winer, but we have to remember, there was a lot of complaint about programing for that to.

And for the N64, while it may have been easier to program for, it was awful at getting a good performance, due to the laggy memory.

So... all gen 5 consoles was hard to program for. This of cause got gradually better with better tools, but it wasn´t really until gen 6 it got reasonable easy.

The Saturn had the best controller ever. It's my go-to controller for emulation of 32-bit games and down. I love the 6-button controller, it's especially great for fighting games. I want this controller scheme to make a comeback, I'm sick of every controller having buttons with the same, diamond layout now.

Genesis was the most popular console in Argentina thanks to Tecoty's, but I've never saw a Saturn in the wild... we transitioned straight to Playstation.
I never knew why but Saturn had literally no market here... well modchips might've helped...

I'm surprised you didn't mention what may have been the biggest screw up from Sega which is actually quite similar to what Nintendo did. Everybody likes to bring up that Nintendo breaking off their deal with Sony for the Play Station add-on to play CD based games on the SNES being the catalyst to Sony starting the PlayStation themselves, but people seem to always forget to mention that Sony actually talked to Sega of Japan about working with them on a new console and Sega of America actually being completely in favor of working with them but the ultimate leaders in charge at Sega of Japan actually laughed Sony out the building. If that didn't happen Sega would actually be working with Sony on whatever console would have existed I don't know if they would have caught up a Saturn still or the PlayStation or something else. It was that last move that last embarrassment that pushed Sony over the edge to start the PlayStation. Sure it never would have happened if Nintendo didn't break the deal with Sony, but Sega could have been a lot more successful if they were willing to work with Sony and ultimately they didn't and they paid for it severely

Ya gotta feel sorry for Michael Katz. He did all that work to get stores selling Genesis and Sonic only for a unplanned surprise launch of Saturn to offend many retail outlets that wouldn’t he included in its launch. They confused their own consume base with 32X (the CD made sense to a degree) and shot themselves in the foot with using the same chip for Saturn and 32X. It’s sad cause Saturn could have been great in all gaming genres but they spread themselves so thin on literally every hand.

Wipeout was also released for the Saturn. It just ran at a lower frame rate than the Playstation version, like pretty much all of the 3rd party titles.

I think about this problem for Sega a lot. They couldn't figure out how to pull their last generation games into the next one. Nintendo was able to but to Sony's benefit they didn't even have to deal with that issue.

I didn’t ever notice Sony saying “$299”. I was too busy playing games on my Sega Saturn. I was not furious to hear that I could get it in may instead of being forced to wait for no reason. The Saturn beat everything Sony ever produced to this date for us diehard gamer purists…through Japanese game imports and regional lock modding. Look at the treasure games and the SNK + RAM cart games. 2D hand drawn sprites is where enjoyable arcade replay ability is. The comic book look and colors is what games should look like. Not the PlayStation’s muddy two earth tone blocky polygons. It’s not the system’s fault that it isn’t STILL selling, STILL owning the purist market space. There were too many crap games flooding American Saturn store shelves because idiots thought 3D was needed. The hardware on ANY system didn’t catch up to mastering 3D until the XBox series X /PS5. And those are overpriced overpowered delicate piles of junk. Where is a great 2D system with glorious colorful 2D hand drawn sprites NOW? A system with a quality build. PS 1 - already, you had to flip it upside down to get it to read a game disc. My Saturn is 27 years old and STILL working. I never had to blow into a single master system cart or HU card or neo-geo cart, either.

I had a Saturn back in the day. I thought it was a nice bit of kit. Trying to recall some of the games I had. Believed it was Children of the Atom and Road Rash. I do recall at the time the roster of games wasn’t that good and you add that to the fact the PSX was taking off big time I remember talk amongst all my friends wasn’t about the Saturn but instead the PSX.

I think at this point the PSX was the new sexy console while the Saturn felt like Sega half-asking it like they had with the Sega CD and the 32x.

I love the Saturn library, especially its Japanese exclusives. Besides bad marketing choices, SEGA failed -- at least outside of Japan -- because their company priority was to re-invent themselves with each console iteration. That was their downfall, ultimately. You can't just leave your mascot and biggest franchises as an after-thought. (Sonic, Shinobi etc). I respect creative risk taking, but not to that extent. NINTENDO were a much more conservative company who not only continued their biggest franchises but built upon them with each console generation.

I got my PS1 back in 1996. There was a deal in Toys R Us where we trade in Sega Genesis Console and 10 games would get heavy discount on PS1. If it wasn't for this promo, I would have gotten Sega Saturn instead. 1996 was a very strange year for both Sega and Sony. It was the year when the console was still finding its own identity, especially for PS1. Because of this, the game had such a wide variety of odd games. Like Krazy Ivan, Warhawk, Jumping Flash, Toon Race, Tobal #1, Beyond the Beyond, and so on. It was until 1997 and 1998 when both console found their mark in history with legendary titles like FF7, Crash Bandacoot, Resident Evil, and so on.

There are several reasons why the Sega Saturn failed in Japan, but the biggest reason is that in the wake of FinalFantasy7, franchises of popular domestic titles such as DQ
I think the biggest reason is that it became a PS exclusive title.
When I was a teenage student, I bought a Sega Saturn with what little money I had for "Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner".
One day, my mind went blank when I suddenly learned from a TV commercial that FF7 would be a PS exclusive title. It was such a shocking event.
