in this video Memory, the intricate web that weaves our past into the fabric of our present, is a remarkable and dynamic aspect of human cognition. This essay explores the workings of my memory, unraveling the complexities that define how I perceive, store, and retrieve information. At its core, memory is a multifaceted process that involves encoding, storage, and retrieval. The journey begins with the encoding of information, where experiences and knowledge are transformed into a format that the brain can understand and store. This initial step is influenced by attention, focus, and emotional significance, shaping what will be retained in the labyrinth of my mind.

Passive Oblivescense - Happens because of the connections between brain cells gradually weaken overtime or when the memory is still there but loses the triggers. (Sights, sounds, etc.)
Targeted forgetting - Happens when we sleep. In certain stages of sleep, we prune the connections between the cells and erase unneeded memory circuits.
Motivated forgetting

I wonder if forgetting from alcohol, weed, etc. would be considered motivated forgetting or something else. I use to have a really good memory, it helped a lot with school and I liked to annoy people with random facts. But as I got older I wanted to forget painful memories, bad experiences, and cure my depression so I turned to those kinds of substances. After a few years of partying I mostly stopped but my memory isn’t nearly what it use to be. I use to be confident in my knowledge when I spoke to people, now I literally forget what I am talking about in the middle of a conversation and it makes me feel like an idiot. He’s right that you can’t choose which memories you lose, something I had to learn the hard way. I wanted to forget back then, but if only I knew my good memories (and ability to retain information) would be erased too, I’d do things differently…

This was quite interesting for me to watch because I have short term memory loss. Once my short term memories become long term, they come back. But ‘til then, they’re gone. What I find interesting is that I am really good at memorizing. If I listen to a song three times, the next day I will have memorized it. It’s really interesting and confusing to me. I can’t technically memorize anything within around 24 hours of hearing it, no matter how many times I do. So if I really need to remember something, i often set an alarm or leave a note for myself, or say it over and over non stop until I need it. But most of the things I try don’t work. I notice when I look back on memories I remember the emotions better than what I saw in the memory. Which leads to another interesting thing, I pay A LOT of attention to small details. But only subconsciously. But if something really seems odd or interesting, I pay most of my attention to it. And because of this I am really really good at telling what people are feeling. I subconsciously am paying attention to very slight changes in their expressions, movements, voices, etc. I didn’t realize it until recently though. But when I did, I realized I’ve always done it. Something funny, one of my favorite book series is fantasy and the hero is an empath, he can feel others emotions. It’s funny to think about the fact that in a way that is actually a thing, except it’s not feeling the emotions, it’s paying attention to details and guessing what those details probably mean. And yeah, I kinda did get sidetracked. But it does relate to the mind so really I didn’t get sidetracked.

“What would life be like if you never forgot anything?”
Oh quite a simple answer for my life. I’d just spend every moment of my life stressing about even more regrets than I already do.

As a person with a really shitty memory and a mom with a really great memory
My life is easier and happier than hers because i generally forget the bad things of my life but also forget the happy things (so it's balanced) but i hate forgetting things that is important and i want to remember like Java...
But my mom's life is tough as she remember all the suffering and abuses of her life but also the good things but sadly the bad things almost always overcome the good things man but she never forget where things are or how to do X thing so that's useful

It's complicated, there is Pros and Cons so you really need more control over the memory and/or emotions (i think Emotion Control is better as you can remember bad things and not feel nothing bad as in some cases bad memories can be useful) to maximize the good aspects of it but diminish the bad aspects too.

Gladly to say, forgetfulness can be another bliss in the light of sweeping away bad memories of the past. Like baptism by pouring holy water upon your head, casting spell, you gonna make yourself sleeping beauty in abandoned forest. The only risk about this is some intruder stepping over the border into your castle and Demolishing all the legacy that should be preserved in your awakening. But those who have no good memories can live like the ignorant. People would say, ignorance is also a type of bliss. So there are two bliss in the world, forgetfulness and ignorance. I must be blessed, thank God!! I have no idea nor no thinking process going on with me.

I feel like perfect memory is portrayed as a couple things, remembering everything, being able to remember any experience from any sense, even the things are brain ignores, remembering the background stuff your brain is aware of but ignores cause you aren't focused on it, being able to remember the emotions, be able to remember the inner nobologue at the time, perfect recall, and weirdly also being able to to consciously be aware of all of that stuff even while your in the present. This means you have are aware of all of your past even while being aware of the present.

If you want to forget something, adress the negative emotions connected to the emotions.

That's how EDMR or EFT works. If there is something you want to forget, use EFT on it, by neutralizing the negative emotions attached to the memory, it will stop bothering you (:
