Is this geared more towards southern Florida? Even though I have only visited Florida, I never had an issue with traffic. I was just there in Orlando Dec 2023 and I was flying in my rental car LOL. The highways and roads were clear as day. Weather was in the 70s, cloudy and rainy. I'll take that over the frigid temps and snow of Wisconsin! Everywhere you go is getting expensive. Just do your research and use wisdom.

Unofficial State motto..., "Come on vacation, leave on probation or face incarceration.". Too, we don't patch potholes. We build around them, allow them to fill with rainwater... toss in an alligator (or two), name them and start selling 'Lake Front Property'. So..., ya'll come on down!

Owned in Ormond Beach a retirement home over the past 6 years. Now retired we’re opting to sell, the attributed cost of ownership has doubled month to month. With that stated it’s still a cost of living bargain to reside in some parts of Florida in comparison to our small city Maine home, taxes are 1/2, car registration is about 30%, no income tax etc. You just need to ask yourself, do you truly fit the Floridian lifestyle? If unsure be smart and rent before buying a home for 4 or 5 months and test drive the lifestyle.

I've lived in SW Florida for 18 years full time. The retiree haven is gone unless you are VERY wealthy. I'm moving as soon as the damage from Hurricane Ian is fully repaired ! One thing Jerry missed is the "new wheels on the road " tax of $200. Bring a vehicle to FL or buy a new vehicle, it's a $200. "Fee". Everything Jerry mentioned is true but he is on the low side. The huge growth in the Myrtle Beach area means that will be the new Florida soon ! Beware of high growth areas dependent upon tourism !!

Moved to Sarasota in 1980..did well in business, always made $$ in real estate, a dozen homes later live in Lakewood Ranch (best master planned community in the country. ) Taxes are 1/2 what family pays in N.J....ins. is still reasonable for me, HOA is $800. annual (no CDD ) summers are hot, but you don't have to shovel humidity. Traffic is an issue (depending on where you're from), keep the negative comments coming, might help the traffic on I -75...

Beautiful diverse California has always been number one and always will be! As Florida sings deeper and deeper into the Bliss, it is no longer a desirable place to live! Believe me, I know! I made the mistake of moving here years ago and consider going back to California each and every day! No, State will ever beat California. It’s just not possible!

Jerry, one of my nephews from Ohio flew to Myrtle Beach a few years ago for a wedding. The flooding there was so bad that he had to take a helicopter to get in. We've had minimal tornadoes, which often give no warning. I've seen more lightening in Georgia and Ohio than where I live in Florida.

It has always been essential to look at HOA reserves. I do agree with you about car insurance. We get a lot of advance warning on hurricanes. I just replaced my roof with high quality roofing. I'm right now replacing my glass sliding doors with hurricane resistant window sliders. Rated much higher than any hurricane that's made landfall recorded. No more shutters to put up before hurricane warnings. Love it here. Lived 24 years in Ohio, 19 in Atlanta, and last 32 years 4 miles from the Atlantic Ocean here in Florida. I've had flood insurance since the last back to back hurricanes hit where I live in 2004. I'm not in a flood zone but it can flood anywhere. It's far less costly by far than the repairs after an uninsured loss due to flooding. I have Social security Income ( I worked to age 67), a nice little pension for 22 years working in Florida with FRS, and a small IRA.

Don't get me wrong I have lived here all my life & I love my city, Miami, and I love the State of Florida. However, it is not as paradisiacal as people make it sound. Due to the influx of people & merciless builders, Florida is super overcrowded. Take Sarasota where my son lives. Traffic there is really bad and not a day goes by without an accident on I-75. I live 10 minutes away from downtown Miami where I work, but it takes me at least 45 minutes to get home due to the traffic. Yes, it has beautiful beaches, but good luck finding affordable parking in Miami Beach. Builders & Realtors misinform people in order to make money. Do your research before moving down here folks!! The grass is not always greener on the other side.

Before you move to Florida AND if you have a wife, daughter, granddaughter or female of childbearing age, please know that her reproductive rights are limited and in danger. If she gets an ectopic pregnancy or has a miscarriage, she can die...like they died back in the middle ages. Many OBGYN doctors are leaving red states because of the fear of men, lawsuits and fanatics coming after their uteruses. So even if she doesn't have complications of pregnancy, she may have a tough time finding doctors. Why doesn't anyone talk about this as being a huge IMPORTANT thing to NOT move to Florida or any red state?? Come on, can't ignore the obvious. Also, young, fertile women would not want to go to a Florida or a red state to go to university there because God forbid, she gets pregnant and needs Plan B. Good lord, she needs to go to California or New York to get care. And guess what? Less women on women campuses means, less young men want to be there because who wants to go to Florida State if it's 75% male.
