MTG Top 10: New Phyrexia | Magic: the Gathering | Episode 409

Curious. Do all American MTG players pronounce Phyrexia this way "phEYErexia" (with the Y pronounced like an eye)? I've not heard it said like this before! :D We would pronounce this as "phERRexia" here in Australia (with the Y pronounced like a soft u as in turn). I find it fascinating how we pronounce the same language differently across the globe

Vapor Snag is an unsummon that pings for 1, which is awesome for UR synergy in cube, or just a good spell for delver if you find you dont bounce your own stuff. This is an awesome set, and could have been one of the best without phyrexian mana, but I cant bitch about it now. Its an awesome, powerful limited environment.

I'm surprised Mental Misstep wasn't on this list

Vault Skirge is also legal in historic, and with cards like Nettlecyst also being there, i think its only a matter of time when it starts getting some points from there.

I kind of hope we don't go back to New Phyrexia, as it is the only villain in Magic that still feels genuinely menacing and I don't have much confidence in the current creative team to be able to do it any justice.
Not least because we simply don't have any real tension anymore, every set is its own story with invariably a weak, ineffective and utterly non-threatening villain who gets easily dispatched of by the main planeswalker cast, resulting in a happy ending. The only exception in this trend in the 10 years since New Phyrexia was Hour of Devastation.

If they go back to New Phyrexia/Mirrodin to cleanse it, I hope they have a legendary human to lead clean-up efforts named something like Ajax, Herald of the New Dawn

This has got to be the most stacked set of all time. how what's the percentage of cards in it with 5 points or more?

Please also note that only 2-3 of these see any major play in MtG's most popular format, Commander. When I play commander, I used to think having a Karn was a good play until I realized I was spending 7 for, what most of the time amounted to: Sorcery, exile target permanent. Within a turn cycle, he was dead. This list is a mostly Modern Top 10 New Phyrexia honestly.

Just imagine if Birthing Pod wasn't banned, or twin wasn't banned, or mental misstep wasn't banned, or infect creatures weren't a narrow archetype (nexus, blighted agent, glistener elf, mutagenic growth).

Then there's assistance in some archetypes like Apostle's Blessing in some overload a single creature decks, blade splicer in D&T/Flicker decks, quite a few creatures that see play in reanimation/control lists, puresteel paladin in equipment combo.

You could probably get a list of 30 cards each with a high point count to them from this one set that we missed out on seeing.

When it comes to spookiness, shadowmoor and innistrad have it down, but when it comes to SCARIEST, the plane most likely to make you shit your pants, New Phyrexia is the one.

Dang, not even birthing pod on list

Am I the only one who was surprised by no Birthing Pod? I wonder how many points it would have had.

It seems like any set related to Mirrodin is doomed to be incredibly busted, even if it stops being Mirrodin and starts being New Phyrexia. Sorry I'm late, it's because I was being dismembered by Azax-Azog as pictured in the card Dismember. That's me. Definitely not because this was uploaded at like 1AM when I was asleep.

Anyway, I'm actually quite surprised Gitaxian Probe wasn't the most played card from New Phyrexia. I suppose it's that massive amount of Modern points that trumps Gitaxian Probe's higher Vintage and Legacy score. Speaking of Vintage, I've been instructed by all five praetors to ask for "Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)"!

Kinda crazy that Mental Misstep didn't make this list at all. It has been #1 on the mtgtop8 most played vintage list; and rarely does it leave the top 5 (even top 3)

Really happy with the new point system, particularly that it gives Pauper the ability to have an impact. It's a format I haven't played a lot of, but absolutely love that it exists and showing more support for it is awesome.

The art on surgical extraction is really sick, in more ways than one.

I'll never understand why more people don't main deck Surgical Extraction in modern. That card has always felt like a necessary staple to me. It is basically Manamorphose or Mishra's Bauble in my eyes, except instead of netting you card or mana advantage, it removes your opponents' win conditions entirely. Then you just play a casual game of counting to 20. Easy peasy.

Two super feel bad situations of casting dismember. One. Using ancient tomb to cast your dismember. Two. Using a fetchland to find your shock land, bringing it onto the field untapped and then casting dismember.
