Whenever I try to speak my rusty German in D, CH or AT, after a few sentences the local usually starts speaking English to me :-) And I believe I offended a local in the Netherlands, when I asked him "Excuse me, do you speak English?" :-D

Seriously tho. When I was at an Interview to get some help from the Arbeitsamt, they asked me if I spoke English. I said yes, I've been learning for 10 years at this point. They didn't acknowledge that, said that if I didn't study English or haven't lived abroad. What they DID give me credit for was my Polish, which technically is my first language due to my parents being polish. The joke is, that my polish is much worse than my English 😅

During my lifetime i probably asked around 100-300 Germans if they speak English, i can't remember that i ever got another reply, it's always: a little bit.

I used to pretend to speak French in Germany while I was like a teenager to buy cigarettes and it worked I think cuz the cAshiers dint rly wana argue/question me to much making the whole thing more awkward.. looking back now, they must have felt like there “French” wasn’t good enough🥲.. also I looked old but not like 18 old. Speaking of age I got kicked out of a bar/restaurant in Canada on my 18th birthday because I was celebrating my birthday the next day but I was still 17 🫣. Gosh the audacity while I was drinking legally for almost 2 years abroad
