nah this whole past arc thier was one clear winner, and it wasnt even toji or gojo, it was geto, im convinced this whole arc was about the tragic downfall of geto, and damn JJK actualy had me sympathise with this dude, this is one of those shows were the anime is hands down the best wat to consume this, like in the manga you only see geto as this mass mudering maniac, and this arc really shows that hes just a kid whos when through some though shit and feels helpless, i really do think if gojo didnt let him isolate and go though his depresion arc he maybe wouldve gone down a different path, but man that ending with gojo/geto, where gojo is left speechless was fantastic, its a shame we wont see more of geto , because hes such a deep and misunderstood character, hes a product of the society he lives in.

Toji is a well-written character. Despite his deadbeat appearance, he actually does everything for family. Let me explain.

He takes on his wife's last name. He gives that same last name to his son and gives his son a female name, so the name will be less likely to spark interest as a Zenin clan successor. And out of all the names he chose, he chose one that meant blessing. In the chance that the Zenin clan did dig their claws into Megumi, he hoped that he would be "blessed", so he doesnt recieve the same treatment Toji and now Maki face from the Zenin clan. There is a later chapter (in the manga--not yet in the anime) where he calls cursed energy "blessings" that further pushes this.

When we first see Toji in the anime the character he is talking to mentions he is unemployed, a start of a conversation to a job offer he won't refuse. He then mentions Megumi. And all those years Toji spent away from Megumi and his mother? It was to keep Megumi's identity a secret. This is why he plays dumb and acts like he doesnt know who Megumi is. But this is news to Toji that his son has been found out. This was all a ploy to get Toji to do a job for them.

Why do you think Toji spends a lot of his money gambling? Its not because he has an addiction. Its because he wants his family to be free from the Zenin clan. This is why that 30 million appealed to him. He wanted to buy his family's freedom which became quite urgent after his son's identity was found out. It's why he holds out while dying to tell Gojo about his son as maybe one last chance for his son's freedom before he dies standing.
