Notice how much he cares about the "listeners" ear not being annoyed. There's something to that. We often play what WE think is cool but never stop to consider our audience, whether they can actually hear it or not..... If you were playing for accomplished musicians it would matter a hell of a lot more than a drunk and high audience.... but I think we get the point. Don't just consider what YOU think is cool. That flat 5 became extremely popular through EVH, and Guthrie is 100% correct:: It is not a not to resolve on or consider as an actual part of the scale.(quote) .."I'ts kind of the worst note in the world, and if you land on that, you're hurting people, really, really jarring note, use it in context as an ornament, it's not considered to be a 'melodic note' in its own right" ~ I"ve never heard a guitarist talk of the flatted fifth in a blues scale in such a careful way as far as its usage is concerned. Just listening to this guy talk is instruction enough let alone hearing him play..... amazing

"Feel responsible for the notes you play...." ~ "The listener will forgive any anomalies they might hear" ~ this guy is amazing in his concern for the listener. How many guitarists prioritize this? Well, we all should, as should any musician.

I've been playing for 40 yrs and I've came across countless teachers to some degree or another, and I've never actually "heard" what any one of them was trying to convey to me, until now! Guthrie Govan you have explained in such a way that I "get it" 100%, and that to me is nothing less than amazing! You, my friend, are God's gift to players everywhere! You have re-excited me to a degree I haven't been in quite a while! A sincere thank you seems to pale in comparison to the true extent of my true gratitude.

The only thing that I think learners of lead guitar don't realize is that you have to be a great rhythm guitarist in order to be a great lead guitarist, that's where their musicality or sense of music is missing. It's unrealistic for a learner to think they can master lead guitar without mastering rhythm guitar first, especially if they are serious about becoming genuine musicians. The current novelty about shred guitar is that it's only circus tricks to impress girls rather than a serious intention to create genuine music 🎸 The great lead guitarists in the real world play both rhythm and lead in their music recordings and concerts

Poor diminished chord... always passed over like an ugly sweater. Slap a locrean logo on there and then change into something more comfortable asap.

First I watch 2 videos of Abasi (thumbing stuff) after that abracadabra this Guthrie lesson almost looks like something I could achieve...Well at least for 5 minutes I've had that feeling... Back to the basic chords 🙂

And everything rythmic is absolutely perfect.

I mean this in the nicest way, but where does this sort of extra-ordinary talent, musical knowledge, eloquence come from. Is it from the planet earth (and to repeat I do mean that nicely !)?. I have just about enough musical knowledge to follow what he is explaining and he does have the ability to break down, explain and simplify some difficult concepts, but that said, will I never be able to execute them at any sort of proficiency ?, I doubt very much !. I had the good fortune to watch him at Music Live around 2009 and he signed a copy of Erotic Cakes for me. Came across as a really humble, nice and patient guy, as he does in many of these type of videos.
