My take on business casual: no ripped clothes, nothing extravagant, no shorts or flip-flops. I don’t really care about dress rules anymore and will not accept them. The only people I meet business wise who still wear suits are lawyers and some consultants.

I don't know about my take. Everyone in my department wears jeans, athletic shoes and a polo or a jersey every day. Even the managers wear that stuff. If anyone shows up in a suit it's usually because they are interviewing for a job somewhere else. Managers hate it when we show up in suites. So yeah we're a bunch of heathens but we get the job done .

I am a piano teacher an general wear chino of any color with a button shirt of any color and, when chilly, a sweater of any color. I figure in my business this makes me look more professional but not necessarily formal. No one wants a dour piano teacher.

If it's an interview and they ask for Smart Casual, just wear a suite,
If it's an interview and they ask for Relaxed Business, just wear a suit,
always dress like you are interviewing to work for the Queen.

People wear more casual clothes for their jobs, a trend that probably started within Silicon Valley. And I'm delighted about it! Putting a tie around your neck every morning before you go to your desk job is much like putting a noose around your neck - a symbol for selling your soul to the company store. Clothes should a) protect you from weather and b) be comfortable! You can look respectable nowadays without such formal attire. Gone with social status signaling and gone with blowing out money for expensive designer clothing! If you think otherwise, you are an anachronism.

I feel that the word casual should not be used at all if dress shoes or loafers are expected. I am not saying I think brightly colored athletic shoes are, but neutral tone comfortable walking shoes should be absolutely acceptable in any work environment that requires a decent amount of walking
