I was just looking foe videos to get some guidance for pointing my wall. I’ve been watching your chateau rebuild over the last few months. You’re like a different person in front of the camera now. A brilliant series Dan. I can’t wait to see it on t.v.
ОтветитьThank you for a good work description
ОтветитьThank you for sharing this 😊
ОтветитьDan, Is this also the same for exterior walls... ( I am in Northeast United States... the winters get below freezing weather... still OK to use this lime mortar for the exterior walls?)
ОтветитьSmart lime pointing, and smart decision to move to rural France too.
ОтветитьYou look like an expert Very nice work!
ОтветитьCan you add pigment so the pointing stands out?
ОтветитьGreat video! You may have given me the confidence to try!
ОтветитьLovely job
ОтветитьGreat information which I will be putting to good use. Thank you Dan. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺 🦘
ОтветитьThis is pretty much the exact opposite of what I’ve been told/taught. I was told 2.5-1, and always use sharp sand, NEVER fine sand.
Ответить2 sqm a day omg that's terrible, should be looking at half a gable a day, and that's not a small trowel it's a pointing key, basically right with everything else but that mix is a bit dry in my opinion
ОтветитьHi,will it be the same mix if the wall was external?
ОтветитьThanks for sharing. I wonder how hard it was for you to take the original lime mortar out from between the stones. I am working on a stone wall also in France and the mortar is coming out some in chunks but most crumbling into dust. Not sure whether it's supposed to do that.
ОтветитьPerfect video, all the information I was looking for. Thank you!
ОтветитьCheers Dan. Most helpful especially to know what materials to use from your experience. I’ve spent ages trying to match up and find what sand to use. All Bricos didn’t have much of a clue or limited material.
ОтветитьUseful video, thanks. I'm mulling over repointing old brick work in a chimney breast I've exposed by removing the failed, smelly 100+ year old lime plaster and I'd be using lime mortar for that (albeit smaller tubs of premixed since I'd only be doing less than 2 square metres and I don't have or need a mixer so I'll be mixing with a paddle). Feels slightly less daunting now seeing that - all the other demos I've seen were for external walls and seemed to have more process involved in it.
ОтветитьIf lime mortar is so good why are all the stone walls weak and falling apart? If there was cement in 1880 they would have used it .
ОтветитьTidy Dan good to see other people way of doing i
Pointing.
I'm in France and funny enough I've got some pointing to do .
Going to subscribe to see what you have restoring. I thought about doing a channel but just had my head down working on my farm house.
👍👍💖
ОтветитьThanks for this! We are in France and have 3 huge fireplaces to re-point. We used your exact method and are extremely happy with the outcome so far! We have only done a tester area but it is perfect! Thanks again!!
ОтветитьFor an external wall how long until its safe from frost?
ОтветитьVery helpful, thanks for sharing.
ОтветитьWow. At complete odds with the majority of lime experts. 2.5:1 with sharp sand aggregate. I guess you would agree for external pointing?
ОтветитьHi there! You do a great job! Is the mix of 4:1 the same for an outside wall? Do I need to add any waterproofer to the mix for an outside wall?
Many thanks
Mark
Your doing perfect job i love watching you and your wife work stay safe i will need some pointing soon.
ОтветитьGoing to try this on my 1860s limestone foundation in New York next week!
ОтветитьExcellent tutorial….thorough and precise….thank you !
ОтветитьNHL is extremely unstable for the most part. Look how crumbly that is, about to call csi out here to look for the body!! 😂 nice pointing technique though 💪
ОтветитьFirst rate Dan! Thank you and I'll implement your technique and advice! ..AND YOU plant and nurture Gardens too so I hear! Ordinary folk are the salt of the Earth and will always shine through the fog of pretentiousness that flies about nowadays!
ОтветитьThat mix looks too dry to me but seems to be working for you. I'd definitely knock it up for longer and with a bit more water for outside use
ОтветитьWish I’d seen this sooner. Great instructions. Thanks.
ОтветитьI have done similar but instead of trying to get the mortar in all the crevices, just apply the mortar over the whole surface. Wait an hour, brush off with a stiff brush the mortar that you do not need. it sounds more wasteful but you can collect the mortar you brushed off, put it back in your mixer, add water and voila, you have a new batch. Much faster that way.
ОтветитьHi Dan, When re-pointing any kind of old wall, be it stone or brick, you should remove at least 2 1/2 times the width of the joint in order to put the correct amount of re-pointing material back in. Obviously, in stone, this would amount to approx. 1-1 1/2" in depth because of the joint variables, 3-5 mm is not deep enough. The use of a churn brush, not a painter's brush is the next stage after you put the Hydraulic lime mortar in. if you don't know how to use the churn brush, you really shouldn't be leading people wrongly, as you are in this video. After that stage, you should leave the mortar alone for a while, before misting it gently with clean water. It's only after 4-5 hours that you should be trying to brush any excess material off the face of the stone. You also fail to mention the 3-stage curing process for lime mortars and if you do your homework, you'll be able to teach it in your next videos.
ОтветитьFor not knowing and being self taught… your work is beautiful!! 💞
ОтветитьI have a 20 ft fireplace, it is gonna take me a whole year! Oh my goodness 😂
ОтветитьReally interesting! You say it is boring but it is a job I would enjoy. A bit like hoovering, I enjoy the satisfaction of an immediate result. I hate cooking & gardening, so I would be a good helper to you! 😀 You do the creative stuff & I’ll wash the dishes!
Ответитьwe in india also used it 👍
ОтветитьGreat job!!!
ОтветитьHi Buddy, awesome video 👍🏽.
In a wet-ish environment even during the summer here in Glasgow. Is there something one can/ needs to add to the mixture to prevent their hard work being washed away before it dries?
Thanks in advance.
Great demo - such detail and care for this old home -
ОтветитьThere would be no issue in putting in a mortar tone power into this would there. To darken it up a little?
ОтветитьEnjoyed learning this technique. Great photography, I liked seeing the work up close.
ОтветитьReally helpful, thanks! 👍🏻
ОтветитьCan v make beam using twisted bars 9"×9"
ОтветитьNice video
ОтветитьCan I use nhl 3.5 for plaster also?
ОтветитьNice simple video no bs
