Harvest Moon 64 - Nintendo 64 Review - HD

This is my favorite game of all times

I Never played but it seems a game for a more mature kid. I was too young to appreciate this complexity on gaming back on the day.

Is it really that expensive now??

Best Harvest Moon I ever played. So many memories playing this game.

I was in elementary school when I found this game in 2002. I skipped a whole week of school just to play this game memories..

This may be unpopular opinion, but i think HM64 is way better than BTN, in most terms (not because childhood bias, i grew up with BTN and years later discover HM64) (this contains spoiler, for those who never play the game just read the last paragraph)

I know the gameplay kinda sucks (especially the time system, like so fast wtf) and BTN Improved it, but let me say few things:

First is how is the characters is handled with love.
In 64, the characters is way more human and natural for 1999 game. The character doesn't have specific place to be in specific time or specific schedule, any character can be anywhere or sometimes even the character just don't want to get outside and you will never find them that day! while the characters in BTN seems to robotic and less dynamic in that sense.

Also the characters have way more back stories in it, some are full of joy while others is just tragic. There are WAY MORE events than in BTN, and more irreversible events (Karen leaves forever due to broken home, Kai leaves forever to pursue Karen, Cliff leaves forever if you marry Ann, Ellen's death and how Elli cannot get married or wooed one month prior the death, and the list goes on). One girl have 1 event for every heart level and more vary (Seeing the legendary rabbit with Ann, Kifu Fairy with Karen, etc) (while in BTN you only have mere question in black, purple, and blue heart) and more after married events than BTN.
One of my favorites is when you marry Ann and she says in Firefly Festival "Rest in ease mom, i married a wonderful man"

In gameplay strength, the game also makes you doing side quest to develop the Village and relationship with villagers as well, some areas or features in the village is unaccessible until you do the village quests (building bridge, building hot spring, restoring vineyard, etc) i wonder why they didn't implement this in BTN. and also some mechanics is way more realistic such as you can only give 1 gift per person per day, rather than you can boost one's affection to max in one day in BTN.

There are lot more to say why this game is way better, but my final point will be the difficulty
BTN is ridiculously easy when it comes to "win" the game. The requirement for completing the game (staying in the village) is a joke you can slack the first 2 years and still make it with no effort then you can do 100% completion with infinite time.
However, HM64 have really tough to get the "good ending" (you stay in the village) and ridiculously difficult to get the "true ending" (Party picture). it makes the whole playtrough of 2 years very very challenging and you won't get bored halfway.

All in all, HM64 deserves more love and for those who never play it but love HM Franchise just play it, please!

To anyone who like this game, get the PSX version, but not the Pal one (crashes when you get married). Its like the Deluxe n64 version, after playing PSX i can never get back because new feutrues.

What kind of monster makes a h shape corn field? Everybody knows thst after the first corn or regrowable products, you pick everything, then cut the crops in a u shape for easy pickings.

How do you get your farm to be shown from that perspective? I'm using the old weird angled view and it takes me an entire day to water 2 patches of crops :\

This game is so great but was pretty difficult for a little kid. I eventually traded it off for something more action packed. Now the carts are so expensive!

Things were different when we were younger, i miss those free times.

can you put the crops in your bag to take them to the box? that looks annoying

I rented this game as a kid and had no idea what to do. I replayed it like a year ago and still had no idea what to do

This is one of my favorite games, but I never owned it...and unfortunately it is not a cheap game.

Getting married and having a child was featured in the first game too though.

it seems like a very detailed game but it is not for me. I use to work at a farm and i dknt need to work at a virtual farm lol

You could get married and have a kid in the first game as well, but this game and Back to Nature made it a lot more interesting.

I loved this game. This is how life should be. I always married Ellen because I never noticed the dude she married anyways and I would feel bad about most others being permanent bachelors.

Playing this game at the age 9 was an omen at how terrible at management I would become. Idk why but I felt a dreadful feeling when I lost at this game - no other game made me feel as terrible at losing quite like harvest moon 64 did - at the age of 9 it hit me hard...

Now that’s my kind of game

Still no remake or remade to the game that I end playing it for hours at a time.

Aww miss N64

I got my start in this series with Back to Nature, but I can see why people like this version so much. The areas seem more interesting, there's more characters to interact with, and the game just seems to have more charm than Back to Nature. I just wish it didn't feel like you were so strapped for time in the game. It feels like you blink and the day is over, to the point it feels like you have to purposefully choose everyday: Do I work on the farm or do I hang out in town? I desperately wish someone would make a romhack that extends the length of a day! At least in Back to Nature, you could work on your farm, and still have an in-game hour or 3 left to talk to your potential wife.

What I liked about this one was, unlike the PS1 version, you can rotate the camera.

I remember my first wife in this game. It was Karen. I noticed that her feelings for me improved when I showed her my dog once. So I tried to see if it would keep working and after 50 "shows", her feelings went up a notch. I showed her my dog 150 times and she fell in love with me. Lol. She was always a hard catch but the girl must love dogs.

Nintendo should add this to their online services so I can play it .-.

I found this in my garage a couple years back along with a game boy covered in a horrible sticker that I scrubbed off with a toothbrush while cleaning, must have been the previous owners. It was in perfect condition, stupidly I sold it to GameStop in hopes of getting some extra cash to buy spider man 2018, they gave me $2.14 lol. It goes on eBay for about 60 in the condition I had it in. I was younger, and less wise. I kept the game boy though, still works!

This game was so awesome and underrated. I remember using GameShark and getting unlimited blue feathers. I got engaged to all the girls. The game didn't know how to handle it though haha. There'd be different chicks coming to my farm all the time lol. Karen, my main girl, never caught me with all my side pieces though haha

First and only harvest moon I played; it was so much fun. Had never heard of it until I played it at a friends house then boom was hooked.

Paved the way for cozy game genre for sure
