Not going to Canon SLM until they have 3rd party lenses. Period. Too bad Sony makes a horrible interface sub-par ergonomics, Fuji has terrible ergonomics and a sub-par interface. Might have to consider Nikon. For now, have what I need out of the SLR.

I sold all my canon equipment 6yrs ago for the technology found in Sony... and thanks to affordability and quality of Tamron lenses, never looked back.

Anyone wants to trade my R6 mii + 24-70L 2.8 for an A7iv + lenses hit me up lol.

I suspected Canon would eventually open up, but only once they felt their own in house lens offerings were fleshed out and mature enough. And APSC makes business sense as Canon has clearly not roadmapped dedicated APSC lenses - not enough margin or market.

Canon is relying on owning such a massive segment of the commercial and professional markets (who have the deepest pockets), and assuming that the big buyers will stick with the brand they know. They don’t care about us smaller outfits as we don’t buy dozens of bodies at a time - they are happy to ignore us as we only buy bodies and lenses occasionally.

This really feels like they don't want to make APSC lenses and that's the only reason they're allowing this.

After working with Nikon for a long time, I shot exclusively with Canon DSLR cameras for eight years, working in different countries around the world. I liked this system mainly because lenses and accessories for it were available for rent in any place I visited, even in remote places. Photo agencies also most often suggested Canon. A few years ago, when Canon announced its mirrorless cameras, I realized that I was ready to switch to such a system, since I had seen analogues from Sony in work. I waited a bit for the development of the Canon system and eventually switched to Sony. Firstly, I can still use Canon DSLR lenses. Secondly, I can buy or rent a huge number of lenses and accessories for Sony, while the Canon mirrorless system is extremely rare, and much more expensive.

So grateful I went with Nikon since at least they allow Tamron full frame lenses. Any "first party only" snobs completely disregard that third parties often make unique designs that the OEM will never make, things like the Tamron 35-150 f/2-2.8. Sony definitely gives the most flexibility of the big 3, with Nikon somewhere in the middle. Even with these lenses, it leaves Canon far behind in that regard.

You didn't mention that Sony cripples the third party lenses to where you can't enjoy the full features of the camera. At least Nikon doesn't do that. There is scuttlebut about the new Tamron 28-75mm GII lens being rebranded and used as the kit lens for the Nikon Z6iii. That doesn't seem to make much sense. Just like the rumor that the Z6iii won't have bird detect autofocus.

I have been a photographer for 40 years and a Canon user for over 20 years, Canon was always ahead of the pack, with an exceptional range of quality lenses, until mirrorless. Canon aren't just behind Sony, but Sony lenses are considerably better value for their customers. For instance, compare the difference between the Sony 200-600mm f5.6-6.3 G OSS Lens to the Canon RF 100-500mm f4.5-7.1 L IS USM, the Sony is nearly half the price and it's internal zoom. I own a Canon R5 and the only thing that's keeping me with Canon is my EF lenses, but my loyalty is running very, very thin. Canon lenses have never been more expensive and lacking in choice, their strategy seems almost insane here, they seem to have no respect or loyalty for their long term customers. And I'm genuinely thinking of moving to Sony, what happened to Canon? Their greed, business model and poor marketing strategy is literally mind-bogglingly strange.

I'm a Canon shooter. As you've mentioned, my R7 is my "back-up" camera on which my ff lenses work beautifully given the high MP. However, it's smaller lenses that I want to take for "grab & go" and on hikes (I'm in my 7th decade, and hikes in the US Pacific Northwest typically begin by heading up the side of a mountain.). So, I am glad to see this 10-18mm option, since Canon's own RF-S with that range, which I own, is pretty really weak.

I was seriously debating whether to move to Canon again after being with Sony for 5 years. But knowing that Canon is keeping an old tradition alive it is not worth it for me. The only manufacturer that I know it can pull that off and has done it for years is Leica. I'm sticking with Sony, there's so much out there and the selection is unbeatable.

but there is one point that is always ignored - with an adapter, EF lenses work like native lenses on the RF mount - not “just about as good as it gets” - no, like native lenses. and EF lenses are a dime a dozen.
these adapters are so cheap that i can easily attach one to any EF lens - and sometimes it's even an advantage if i use an adapter with a filter slot.

People wanting Sigma lenses aren't really leaving Canon because they wouldn't buy Canon lenses. Someone who buys a Sony body then buys a handful of Sigma lenses to use on it really isn't a Sony shooter either. If you want Sigma lenses buy a Sigma body.

Thank you for telling the TRUTH. Yes, it's a BAD JOKE that Canon allows third parties to manufacture ONLY APSC lenses with auto focus! As Jared Polin pointed out in one of his recent videos that Canon admitted they wanted to maximize their profit. No auto focus lenses from third parties is one of the two reasons that keeps me from buying Canon. The other is they keep the LATEST TECHNOLOGIES for their high-end cameras only. On the other hand, Sony gives their newly-released cameras the latest technologies even though most of these cameras are on the lower end.

I've been a Canon user for decades. I've got no intention of changing brands. However, I will not be upgrading to a Canon R camera until a) Canon allow third party full frame lenses in RF mount and b) Canon start producing a wider range of RF mount lenses. I will be sticking with Canon DSLR cameras and EF lenses for the foreseeable future.

I own the Sony a6700 and the canon R7, I bought the a6700 at the start of the year and the R7 when it was released, I have barely used the r7 since buying the a6700 because I have 4 x sigma/Sony APSC lens that are small, compact, sharp with wide aperture’s.
I was contemplating selling the R7, but these lenses absolutely change the game for me, I’d be very interested in a APSC Tele zoom APSC lens for sport that could actually utilise the R7’s 15 frames a second without an f8 aperture

I was lucky enough to get the Viltrox RF f1.8 85mm autofocus lens for Canon. It is hit & miss in some lighting situations at f1.8 but when it gets focus right, it is perfect. I tend to shoot it at f2.8 mostly as it's more consistent in grabbing focus. I only have one Canon RF lens, the RF 24-105mm f4. I don't plan on getting any more due to the exorbitant costs in Australia but would consider Sigma for sure if they bring out full frame RF lenses.

Well in their defense, when Canon expands their full frame line up and not the APS-C, people complain that Canon is not serious about the APS-C system. When more APS-C lenses do come out, you complain that there are not thinking about people who shoot both APS-C and FF?
I personally think it's fair that they opened up APS-C lenses first. God knows where this will go from here, but as an R7/R6 shooter I'm excited about this move

I use an R5 with the adapter. The first time I took it into the woods to photograph birds, I had my EF based Sigma 150-600c on it. Using animal eye detect, it locked onto a chicadee's eye; black head, tiny black eye. Third party lens and it worked very well. Since then, it's only gotten better with the firmware updates. I'll be staying with Canon.

I agree with everything you just said Matt. On the other hand Canon absolutely NEEDED more APSC lenses. Their 4 (FOUR) rf-s apsc lenses were essentially kit lenses, and not very good ones at that. No PZ rf-s lenses. No lens hoods with $500 lenses???? C'mon....

Canon seems to have forgotten what made the EF mount so popular is that you can get so many great third party options with it. That's what built them up in the 90s and early 2000s, and they seem to have completely forgotten that.

While Canon didn't allow 3rd party lenses, Canon has the best system to allow you to adapt EF lenses to the mirrorless cams with no quality or speed loss. I'm shooting all adapted EF lenses and saved a bunch of money, and get basically the same performance as the RF lenses. In fact the Sigma 50 1.4 Art on the R6 II is smaller than, and just 99% as sharp as the RF 1.2 version, and 4x cheaper! Oh and ironically the Sigma Art adapted focuses significantly faster than the RF50 1.2.... and accuracy is exceptional on the R6 II (essentially never misses).

With Sony and Nikon the adapted lenses don't work as well as their native lenses so if they didn't have 3rd party options, it would be really bad.

I shoot Canon. Best thing about Canon is Canon Professional Services. They answer the phone, repair the gear, and take care of shooters. Love my RF system. I never shoot APSC. Tough to move to a new system, I'm deep into Canon. Lots of EF and RF glass. Lots of camera bodies. What bothers me most about Canon is the Cripple Hammer. They won't give me zebras on stills on the R5. Should be an easy peasy software update. Frustrating.

If I could deal with Sony's ergonomics, I might not be shooting a Canon R5, because I find their lens policy obnoxious. But since I don't need that many different lenses for the R5, and the ones I do need are really good (28-70, 70-200), it gets the job done. But when I wanted to add something really wide, I would have liked more options. I much prefer Fuji as a company, for instance.
