"I Knew Him" Winter Soldier Begins to Remember His Past - Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Winter Soldier’s programming has been described as severe brain damage to the point where he was sleepwalking while conscious and hyper aware. After they had him in this state they built a second personality that was brought forward in that subconscious by the trigger words. The suppression machine kept his memories away to stop them bleeding into the persona they have created. One that was totally obedient and knew no morals, no convictions, no principles, no emotions. Only orders. Only compliance.

Imagine getting flashes of what seems to be someone else’s life. Knowing that it’s your own. Knowing that your handlers are screwing with your head but being absolutely powerless to stop it or even resist it.

“But I knew him” I know I had a life before you turned me into what I am now. I know I knew him. I know he meant something to me. I know you have taken all this away from me and I know you are going to force me to kill him and I can’t do anything to stop it but I KNOW I knew him.

And he knows that he’s about to be put back into the sleepwalk trance and when he awakes, this man who he knows and who is his only connection to who he truly is or could even tell Winter Soldier what his real name is… will most likely be dead by Winter Soldier’s own hand and his torment will continue forever.

Imagine that hell… I’m sure if Bucky was able to, he would have rather put his sidearm to his head and pulled the trigger but Hydra even took the free will to do THAT from him as well.

This scene makes me tear up every time

I love the detail as the seat launched Bucky back you see how he's confused state goes straight to fear due to the shock treatment he knew it was coming he was ready to scream even before it began

This scene makes me cry everytime I watch it, with Bucky remembering his horrific past, him saying "But I knew him" and his fear as the machine started, it breaks me every time. Sebastian's acting in this scene is phenomenal

I feel truly sorry for Barnes. Going through shock therapy.

The number of commenters criticizing Bucky for not leaving is mind boggling lol like holy shit. At this point, dude's basically a mostly vegetable brained zombie who can simply still fight the people he's directed to kill...and the sudden presence of some random vague memories doesn't mean he's regained total control of his brain. He has zero control. He cannot make real choices. He's not even choosing to remember. Dude doesn't even have the basic, simple ability to at least try to lie to Pierce in order to prevent the horrible pain he knows is coming if he can't act like the Winter Soldier...and that should be a much easier task than suddenly choosing to fight your way out of a place you've never left on your own, not as apart of a very specific mission.


Bucky only ever regained control & old memories after years of recovery time thanks to the healing powers of the serum. 🤦
If any of us normal people had our brains put through what Bucky's brain was put through by Hydra....we'd be spending the rest of our lives in a nursing home unable to take care of ourselves, much less able to escape...and that's if we weren't in a permanent coma due to the extensive brain damage (which is the more realistic outcome - no way my weak ass frontal lobe would make it).
But the poor guy's brain isn't invincible...Hydra just has to put more effort into keeping the neurons destroyed.

I'll say this again: Wanda lost the most while Bucky suffered the most in the entire MCU.

But yet everyone was upset that Iron Man didn't get his revenge but can clearly see this man had no choice to kill his parents and anyone else. Steve was a good damn friend to pick him over tony

Alexander Pierce is possibly the most underrated villain in the MCU, he was more of a Hydra leader than Red Skull was in the movies and he did give the impression of being an intelligent and cruel leader. Too bad they killed him in one go since he feels like he could give more as a villain working from the shadows.

Everyone cries out for the Winter Soldier to come back/for Bucky to become brainwashed by Hydra again, but goddamnit this man has been through enough! Sure he's pulling his punches, but that's because he has deep rooted trauma of being a mindless killing machine for 70 years and doesn't want to return to old habits.

Plus, it's not like he can't fight anymore. He's shown in TFATWS that he's still extremely skilled, he just doesn't want to fight to kill anymore.

Bucky didn't deserve that....
