Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 Review: CHEAPER and BETTER?!

I certainly didn't expect to hear the words "doggy nipples" today.

Why does nobody compare the Sigma 70-200MM to the og sony 70-200mm GM when comparing price points? It is still being sold new. Personally it doesnt make any sense to me.

I am primarily a Portrait photographer, wanting to cover more sports events. I have tried to take the cheaper route when it comes to a telephoto for Sports.
After trying multiple lenses and realizing I'm still better off cropping from my 85mm 1.8 for a sharper and better image, I feel like sometimes you just have to buy the real thing and not worry about it anymore. I need high fps and near-perfect focusing with no lag as I zoom in and track fast-moving subjects.

The news of this Sigma was exciting but Sony is still at the top.

Obviously it's a no brainer to go for the Sigma. I see no reasons (not significant enough anyway) to waste a tonne of more money for the Sony GM.

Good review, but were is the new Tamron 70-180 G2 in this comparison ?

I have not played with this Sigma lens - but I have the 24-70 F2.8.... the thing that annoys me about that is that it zooms the wrong way. And what is very annoying is that no-one mentioned it in their reviews. I have honestly thought about selling it and buying the GM because of it because it f**ks with my flow (nothing worse than wanting to zoom in and missing a moment because it zoomed out). Does this lens have the same issue?

Imagine having one lens, from 24mm to 200mm. or 80-300mm. Life is too short for short zoom range.

Sony performs better. Save up, get it used, refurbished etc but don't skimp on quality. The sigma 85mm may be better than it's counterpart but not this one.

I'm wondering if you tested this lens on moving subjects and how well the autofocus worked in comparison to the GM II? Other reviewers said the GM kicked the Sigma's butt in this regard. Not only greater FPS, but a higher percentage of hits. I have pre-ordered the A9 III. With that camera, Sigma is not in the game with this zoom.

Gerald, no mystery why Sony limits the fps on third-party E-mount lens, it is to protect some sales of their own Sony lenses. Same for no TCs on third-party E-mount lenses. The L version of this lens will take TCs on Leica and Panasonic as well as full fps. Strictly a Sony business decision. Do you really think many would buy the Sony at $1300 USD more if this Sigma was allowed to do 20fps on the A9/A9II, 30 fps on the A1, and 120 fps on the A9III, and with TCs. No way. I think they hit the mark well. Gerald has a big professional audience but the amateurs would be getting pretty close to the GMii and still have enough money for an entire other lens. This lens also makes the equivalent primes look good in their lineup. Parents should get this one for all their kid’s sports and recitals. I mean don’t you want people to hire you for your superior gear and skill?

More costly for me than the price difference. I had a 70-180 and it was decent for the time before gmii 70-200. The Sony gm2 worth every penny and has made me a lot of sales.

I'm in the market for an e-mount 70-200mm and I struggle to pull the trigger on the sony one so I was excited about the sigma. but the non-linear focus pulling is a deal breaker for me.

Will you be reviewing the a 9 iii?

This video is only the half world there is the complete video filming missing. Eg stabilization while filming….? …etc

This lens is a great option for L-mount… and that’s it. I wouldn’t pick it for Sony, there’s better alternatives there. If one can live with the limitations in frame rate and teleconverters, then the G2 Tamron is a better pick, and if one can’t, well, you go with one of the GMs.

Gerald have you done a video evaluating matte boxes? Some very popular matte boxes are of no use because they're too shallow or they don't have side flaps. Or they are made out of cheap plastic and the frames don't slide into place. What's a good matte box? the kind that attach to the lens or to the rods?

When is the review having for new blackmagic cinema camera full frame ?

I truly don't get the critiques of the zoom vs focus ring placement. You zoom less often = farther away; you focus constantly = closer to the body. You are habituated to a stupider arrangement? = Sony

a7s3 vs nikon z8 would be amazing

So much cons, compare to sony's, i will definitely span few hundred more to get sony instead.

Excellent review! I would love to have this lens, except for the non-linear MF ... I don't understand for whom is this ment for? The non-linear MF sucks in every aspect and I can imagin only one logical reason to do this and that is some kind of embargo from SONY that would tell the manufacturers which features they are allowed to have in their lenses and which not, so they keep their lenses so exclusive and make it little bit more worth the money. I think we should write a complaint letter to Sigma to stop implementing non-linear MF in their lenses. Even Samyang uses linear focusing in their 35-150mm lens and it is excellent. So for me this is a major flaw. And actually I owned the DSLR version of the Sigma 70-200 and I did like the swapped focusing and zooming rings. As I do focus manually a lot, I felt much more comfortable when I had the camera on a tripod and shot long events, as I could have my hand closer to the camera body, which reduces camera shake and pain in the arm.
