Michael Pollan's new book "How To Change Your Mind" surveys the highly controversial terrain of the renaissance of both the science and popular usage of psychedelic substances. As one of our most brilliant and clear-eyed explorers of such topics as plant intelligence and how we feed ourselves, Michael will share his luminous insights from what began as investigative reportage and became a very personal interior journey into the mystery of consciousness and the nature of spirituality.

This keynote talk was delivered at the 2018 National Bioneers Conference.

Bio: Michael Pollan, a contributing writer to The New York Times Magazine since 1987, Professor of Journalism at UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism and Director of the Knight Program in Science and Environmental Journalism, is one of the nation's most influential writers and scientific and environmental investigative journalists. His many award-winning, best-selling books include: The Botany of Desire; The Omnivore's Dilemma; In Defense of Food; and, most recently, How to Change Your Mind.

The thing that keeps coming to me as I’m trying to get into psychedelics somewhat. I’m curious. I wanna know more. I’m not afraid of taking psychedelics myself.

But watching my mom or my kids do it. I couldn’t. I can’t.

The question that keeps coming back to me constantly on this one … what about people that don’t want to have a drug experience? I get the feeling that we are peering down our noses at them. When in reality., some people don’t need a terrifying tear streaked experience to get through life.

In other words , I’m not convinced that the experiment is going to solve much. People always say drugs are going to solve everything prior to the legalization.

Maybe everybody just wants to trip and go to a good concert and that’s fine. When we start talking about spirits and enlightenment and all this, I just really kind of wonder. In the end, it may just be another teenage drug experience that we’re pumping up to be something it’s not because it’s been prohibited by the government for all these years and turned into a “martyr” drug.

On my acid trip, i used to look at the mirror.
I always thought that i looked really good, like i was photoshoped.
My conclusion was that if u have a positive view of yourself, u would look good and vice versa.
And when i looked at my friends, they also looked ut. But when i looked at people i didn't know, they would looked weird.
I really think at everybody should experience an acid trip.
Too bad it got a bad rep.

People on the trip are not jumping from windows. They are inprisoned by psychiatry, medicated slowly to death. The reason is, that not psychonauts, nor psychiatrists, have any more then teen-age technology how to use it. Druids trained for 15 years in forests, talking to these plants daily, before permitted to use psychedelics. You just have absolutely no idea what you are doing, or to put it differently, you just trippin

Psychedelics in general have done what hundreds of hours of PTSD therapy couldn't. I went from being on 31 pill daily for mental states to 0 over the course of 13 weeks. Like everything in the world.
It's not for everyone and experiences will certainly vary. Me and my friends approached it from a lens of healing and learning and it's exactly what we got out of it.

Psychedelics were used in MK Ultra. Be very careful with this, especially drug assisted therapy. Can you imagine someone malevolent, highly skilled, working on YOU while you're under the influence?

Be careful. The ego dissolution coming from psychedelic use may "feel" good, but that's also a stage of brainwashing, destruction of your sense of self(ego) which feels the same, to then rebuild you into a new person. By being unable to differentiate between yourself and others (which is what having no ego is like) you are extremely susceptible to external influence, in the right conditions you can be led to believe another person is your thoughts.

Be safe.
