Insightful. Hated getting out to lock the 4WD system. Yeah, my truck is old school - Manual

in shortest : AWD is Dynamic while 4WD is Static.

For me, I think that the key takeaway is that constant power to all 4 wheels, instead of varying power makes for better off-road slow-speed conditions as opposed to varying power, which is better for high-speed on-road conditions.

The Baja truck you showed in the end of the video looks like Brice Menzies AWD. Which I thought was the way of the future for podiums in Baja and Desert racing. Almost all Baja 1000 trophy trucks are 2WD. :) Cool Video!

Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, according to Jeep, when you turn the Drive dial to Automatic it sends 60% power to the front tires. when you select Sport it sends 60% to the rear tires.

This isn't quite right for the 4runner 4wd at least. On my 2008 the rear is always powered, if i flip a switch the front also gets power, but until I hit a button locking the front and rear I'm essentially in AWD.......till I go to 4lo and then i'm going wherever.

What are the odds of people using a 4WD in everyday driving. I'd say about 45% depending on where you are and the off beaten road path. AWD is best used for everyday driving on semu inperfect road pavement condition where handling is extremely important. I choose awd over front wheel and rear wheel drive just because of that superb handling and composure. I just feel much safer driving AWD in poor weather condition than spining out of control into a ditch with front wheel or rear wheel vehicle in bad weather condition.

The answer depends on the vehicle. Old-school all-wheel drive like Land Rovers and Land Cruisers basically it's just four wheel drive all the time except there's an open differential in the transfer case that allows the front and rear drive shaft spin at different rates so that it can be in 4-wheel drive on the street and turn corners without chirping the tires but those have that locking Center differential it will lock in the transfer case so that the drive shaft spin at the same rate just like standard four-wheel drive so there you go now add the first thing I said to some brake powered traction control system

I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota all wheel drive truck. It doesn't have any fancy computer control AWD but I can also lock it up with 4wHI and 4wLO. Where would this fit into this debate.

They're "actually intended for" rock climbing, etc.? No, trucks are actually intended for hauling loads. What were you thinking?

With this logic, it would appear tha AWD can also be a 4WD right. If the toque can be allocated to any tire as needed, this should mean each tire can get an equal 1/4 right? Which should effectively make it a 4WD

Well, hold on now. The opening:

I have 4WD now, but I didn't always have it. But I could drive in any condition and keep it in the road and up the hills with front wheel drive. Similarly, my first car was a VW bug and I could drive that in anything (engine weight was in the back, but still over the drive wheel).

It is easier now, with 4WD...but you can't say that front wheel drive cars can't handle it. They are quite capable, dependent on the driver.

AWD - Always gives power to all 4 wheels at the same time. 4X4 - Front differential locks onto the back differential therefore giving power to both differentials (and all 4 wheel connectioned to these).

sooooo many ways you managed to talk shite.... 4x4 can be with 3 open diffs, with the option to lock the tranfer case... the mercedes gaywagen's can have a locker on the front and rear diff, and the transfer case. thats an all wheels will turn at equal speed situation. some other cars can feature a limited speed differential in the transfer case and on the axles them self. allso some triple axle trucks have acutally 3 axles, where 4 can be powered by the engine... 6x4 is not uncommon.

so... there is full or partial drive, out of partial you can have some automatics like.. some sortha viscouse coupling or other means, some can have an limited speed differential there, while others actualy have no diff in the transfer case and when 4 wheel drive is selected its equal to a locked transfer case.. like the aro. and many pickups (but not all)
and there are 4x4 cars like the Niva, it will drive all 4 wheels, but you can lock the transfer case. however the axles have no lockers or limited slip differentials.

4x4 --> has 2 axels, both recive power , can come with or without locking transfer case / axles.
AWD --> no mather how many axles it has, it CAN drive all of them, but its selectable manually/automaticly. can come with or without locking transfer case/axles.

and there you go. AWD is more fuel efficient.
4x4 gets you places where AWD can not.

best would be.... torsen diff in the locker and axles, with the option to have em fixed lock up when needed. be it offroad or onroad. thats the most grip you can ever get. sadly the most losses too. so it may not benefit a sportscar with limited power. can take tight turns, no issues. sadly thisone has the most mass too.
the efficient one is AWD. will drive axles as needed. less mass, less mechanical loss, sadly can't get even remotely as much grip. regardless of situation.

4WD is best. It doesn’t take a video to prove that. Don’t believe it? Take an AWD vehicle and get it stuck somewhere. Then…..call the recovery/tow company. It’s simple.

Then you get things like my truck. Full time 4x4 it’s all wheel drive when I want it to be but I can lock the transfer case like a standard 4x4. The only downside is I constantly have my front axle spinning putting more wear on things

If youre on a curvy road and rain and some sleet, can you drive on 4wd? I thought AWD would work better. So on this road even if you use 4L it may not work properly. AWD should be on all 4WD vehicles. I think
