Few thoughts after doing this:
- It's a deeper rabbit hole than this one, but most of what I do in this video can be done on an Android phone.
- The stuff that I had to do to get Box64 to work with Steam is not required anymore, BUT you need a lot of RAM to use the new version that has a working login window. If you have a phone/SBC with less RAM, it might be worth waiting for more improvements or you can just do what I did.
- When translation software improves (and drivers), I believe we will see companies that release ARM gaming handhelds that are made for local PC gaming. Cost, heat, and power consumption being the biggest motivators.

I wonder what the potential could be to have ARM chips, being told that they are more power efficient compared to x86 processors, on a portable devices. Gaming handheld UMPC is slowly becoming a thing in these days, but almost all devices are told that people wish for better battery life. It's not gonna be an easy solution, but one can dream.

Just imagine the average pc user having to recompile the kernel to be able to run a game. I love linux but come on, the user experience is beyond horrible. Its 2023, it should be better by now.

so if proton is working for you does this not mean you have vulkan also? I just kinda don't believe proton works considering vulkan isn't installable.

Have you used PipeWire or PulseAudio for the tests? PipeWire can change the buffer size on the fly to minimize latency. This can sometimes confuse apps, so you can lock the "quantum" to n samples like this: pw-metadata n settings 0 clock.force-quantum 512 - This can solve all kinds of issues, stutters or crashes (particularly with JACK clients).

$40 caught my attention.
Usually, the reason for software anything is independence.

Example (not saying it is possible)
LLVMpipe = software-pipe [blob-mali/mesa/box86/box64/FEX-Emu/...] unhandled pipe-back-to software

Voice issues (pc-linux) wine(-alsa soundchip -hdmi switching-dropping).?

If all these are possible, that means everything-else native is good to go and there is no-justification for x86 to continue. At $40, one assigned as GPU and another assigned as CPU because many-boards are designed with 2 sockets...

Just a vector for future-shopping possibilities and news reading ...

Building 32bit GPU drivers should be easy enough to get x86_32 applications working with FEX. Btw, Panfork now seems to be deprecated in favor of Panfrost (upstream Mesa!), which should simplify things further. Once Cortex-A77/78 or X cores hit the SBC sector, things will get really interesting, since those architectures really ramped up performance.

Yes x86 Linux has more desktop support, but that doesn't mean desktop computers should be called x86 not "desktop/PC". Maybe PC but PC is more generalized now.

Unfortunately most developers don't have the time to support arm native when they won't make money from it, but it could work fine. Mesa is basically what should be used, if you can't use vulkan, which is even better.

Just out of curiosity, I have an Orange Pi 5 with 8GB ram, it has a rk3588s that runs at slightly higher speeds than your edge2, not by a lot at all, but still more. and it has the same GPU, so I should be able to do exactly what you're doing on that board right? I know there are edge cases where despite hardware being nearly the same, the board itself is what makes the difference. I'd really like to know cause I've considered buying another at 16GB of ram because I really like the cost to performance of the board. I live in Canada so in my crappy money a 16GB board is under 200 where as the edge2 with 8GB ram is literally double the price at 419$ for the 8GB ram which is nuts, and 592$ for the 16GB. Am I missing something about the edge2 that makes it better? I don't quite understand why it's so much more expensive compared to the orange pi when the specs are better for the orange pi 5.

Generally in my exp (software developer) any code that creates a compiled binary will always need to be recompiled to reflect changes. The new instructions do not exist in the old binary. So, no matter how many changes you make to the code base itself they are not reflected in the old binary instruction set. Only upon being re-compiled can the new code / instruction changes be accessed.
