I’m glad the wall is destroyed but at the same I’m glad parts of it still stand as a memory of a dark chapter of history

You know when a political system fails, or a country is in ruin when the smart people flee. But it's like it's just either too hard to admit and reform and just build a nice place to live, because some parliaments just have too big of a ego sometimes

I had a boss born in the eastern part of Germany but his folks had moved to the western sector before the wall went up. They moved to the US later, when boss was about thirteen. I watched that movie about the folks who escaped in a balloon. A local balloon club had an exhibition in the theater, which was cool.

I watched this on TV, my dad was in shock, his parents overjoyed. I think this event granted is the short era of minor conflicts we had. Now, we once again march towards war for a party of elites for nothing more than to soothe their ruffled egos because they cant take control in their nation.

I always cry when I see this. I remember watching it on TV when it happened with my family. We were shocked and couldn't believe what we were seeing. East Berliners coming through the gates. But also scared of what Russia's response was going to be. They crushed revolutions before. This time they did nothing. Watching families reuniting, singing, and dancing. Then destroying the wall. Such an awesome moment.

Crazy to think the only time in the 20th century in Europe to explore and be semi happy was 1900-1913 1980-onward

That's allmost 70 years of not being able to explore or go out an living in war torn areas

I I will never forget that. I was driving and heard it in the radio .... I rushed home to put the TV on. I never never never thought that this could happen during my live. I always thought Germany will only be unified in an atomic apocalypse. In the year I was born the wall was build. And no one of my children has experienced the divided Germany.

Unbelievable.

Actually, it was Walter Ulbricht and his lie that 'no one had the intention to build a wall' who built the wall, not Erich Honecker.

I was still very young at the time but I could feel that something serious was going on. It still blows my mind how the socialist tyranny collapsed without a single shot fired. Now, some 30 years and one pandemic later, I'm not quite sure who absorbed whom.

I was actually in Berlin a little more than a month ago, and I stood near the Brandenburg Gate where Ronald Reagan said “Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” I also visited a museum dedicated to the DDR (that stood for the Deutche Demokratische Republik). But that was only a very small sample of what I did in Berlin that week.
