This makes me think about a series when I was younger called Bu-Bum! La strada verso casa. It's a completely different story but gives me the same vibe. And it's also with a boy, planes and war.

A lot of people might not know this (which is properly mostly us Americans) but many in Europe associates gum with Americans because of how much we brought with us during the World Wars. It really put a smile on my face when I saw him offer the boy some gum: I was like "yup, a true red blooded American right there!"
