NTSC and PAL are/were broadcast TV standards defining colour encoding. There's no such thing in the modern digital world. This video is misleading and only demonstrates the shooting of video at different frame rates

PAL and NTSC are broadcast standards. SECAM is another.

NTSC is pretty much everywhere outside North America & Mexico, Japan, South Korea.

PAL and SECAM are based off 50Hz and are used almost everywhere else.

Hi Denis, I use a GoPRo Hero 6 Black In India (We are a PAL country). While going through a lots of posts, I have leant that we should shoot in NTSC as it is a widely accepted platform in digital age. And I don't think that I face any problem while shooting in natural light, however shooting indoor with an electric light, I see a lot of flickering. What do you suggest, shooting indoors with PAL and outdoors with NTSC. But then I read one of your comments where you said that cannot or shouldnot be combined. How can overcome this concern?

Thanks in advance

Hi there, I’ve been trying to figure out the maths and I’m struggling with PAL as it’s hard to keep frames equal when slowing footage down slightly.
I’ve found a setting on Filmic pro to change between shooting 50hz instead of 60hz. If I use that will I still get flicker at 24/30/60/120?

hey... but dont you counter flickering with lowering or upping the shutter speed? like in europe you would use either 1/50 or 1/25... ? doesnt really have much to do with the framerate i think

PAL vs. NTSC is not about the framerate, it is about how to encode color information into an analog black-and-white video signal. On a black-and-white screen you will see the color signal as a diagonally striped pattern. The entire concept of analog video is outdated by at least 10 years.

Very confusing... I still don't get it... so when they were shooting TV series in the old days in USA, did they use two parallel cameras so they could also show it in european countries? So one camera would film everything in NTSC and the other in PAL? Otherwise there would be errors in the TV show in europe (such as light flickering in indoor scenes)?

The flickering is mostly due to the frame rate of the camera

Hi noob here.
Can't you just change fps to 50? Or does it has something to do with the way it's incoded to 60hz.

I have heard that the flickering could be caused by the use of wrong sd card? Something with write speed.

Hi Denis! Tnx for your research!

I've just got myself a Hero4 Black so the topic is highly relevant. While your explanation sound good, i still have some doubts. How come my Hero3 Black DOES NOT flicker and Hero4 Black DOES under same conditions and settings (NTSC)? Hero4 flickers @ any resolutions and fps with NTSC setting and completely smooth with PAL. My Hero3 is equally smooth with NTSC AND PAL.

Thank you again!

Thanks for explaining - it annoyed me that being in Sweden (choosing PAL of course...since...thats just what you do here) it wouldnt choose 60 FPS.
