In this video, Maryke explains what happens inside your muscle when you strain or tear a hamstring, how the body repairs and heals a hamstring strain, and how to use your knowledge of this healing process to design the optimal treatment plan. She also discusses why using anti-inflammatory drugs is not a good idea when you have a hamstring strain.

When I internally rotate my hip I get a cramping like pain in my hamstring and when I lengthen my leg my pelvis/hip hurts. I've had this issue for over a year now and my PT can't figure it out. It's all on the left side. I'm not constantly in pain by the way, it's only when doing those motions. Any ideas as I'm at a loss? Thanks

Hi. I stretched my leg to my back trying to touch my back. I did it a little fast like kicking. I felt a twisting feeling and a little pain. now when I touch the glut and hamstring, they are a bit tender and I feel them. I can walk and don't really have pain. Will it heal at home without any treatment at all and just resting? Please answer I am really worried and a bit shy to see a doctor. :(

Wow, you explained my current issues very well. I injured my right lower hamstring a week ago, it's a minor strain, but it is painful. I can do light workouts for now, but I like to avoid stressful exercises until I can strengthen both hamstrings.

I haven’t been stretching or lifting, I had been throwing on some ankle weights. Well with ankle weights on and shooting some yard hoops, ya pulled it! And bad this time. Don’t remember other couple times being so crippled the next two days (so far). Thanks for the advice I will be patient and align the cells in couple months. Ugh

Great explanation. I made the mistake of sprinting a few hours after doing a couple of sets of squats, deadlifts, and lunges. I developed a small tweak on my left hamstring. I pushed through my sprint, then ended the workout. I'm hoping to heal partially within a few days using IFT to speed the healing process. Then I'll switch to longer sprints (800m) to lower my intensity level while still getting relevant training.

I had an acl reconstruction 2009 and hamstring graft. The surgeon said that i must exercise to strengthen the muscles, which i did. In 2020 i started taking medication for a different ailment and all of a sudden i had to stop training and doing HIIT because coffee and water was making me have anaphylaxis, then severe joint and muscle pain. By being immobile and not training, the hamstring became weak again and started to hurt after an anaphylaxis attack. I now keep having pain after every anaphylaxis. My physio said the acl was fine, but i need to strengthen the hamstring as it is very weak. Everytime i do leg curls, it seems to strain the muscle and i need to recover. This explains what the surgeon told me regarding keep training the muscle 🤔

My Hamstring has been in extreme pain for over 3+ weeks. I don’t know what to do. My doctor prescribed me Meloxicam and it hasn’t done anything. I limp and it’s extremely painful in certain movements, especially laying down when I go to bed. I seriously don’t know what to do anymore, I am in serious pain. I want to exercise but the pain is terrible. What should I do?

I see where I made a mistake. I could walk, light jog, and run after 2 weeks of a hamstring pull. I played today and after exerting myself a tad too much, I felt another pull in the same area. Guess I need a solid month before returning to any sports...

It’s been 12 days since my injury first 3-5 day the pain was there only in a seated position when i lay down no pain or if i stand up very little pain but for the past 5-6 days i can barely walk the pain so so much now i haven left my house for 2 days now i went to a clinic they said I’ve injured the hamstring. How long should i expect this level of pain before I start the rehab process ? Also i feel like the pain goes down to the palm of my feet when i walk. Please help

Well explained..i did standing leg curls..felt a pop..was scared shitless as you can imagine..was in pain on the first day..was waiting for the bruising the next morning to check if it was a strain or tear. No bruising thankfully..but going to book a few sessions with the physio to reallign the fibres. Not out of the woods yet..its day 3.

Great explanation. I got a high grade 1/low,grade 2 strain while doing a 5K but it had been brewing for a while. I can’t seem to figure out my PT right now as I add more and it feels wonky and then I dial it back and I feel like I am not making as much progress as I would like. Thankfully mine is mid muscle so I hear that heals quicker. I teach tennis so it’s hard to stay off the injury.

So...I was sprinting earlier today and I felt a pop in my left ham. Immediately stopped running...not because I wanted to, just saying. Been sprinting for years, but I didn't warm up properly and have a problem with stretching on a regular basis and I'm 47 years old. Anyway...I hope I haven't seriously injured my hamstring. Let me know what you think about anything I can do.

So I’m not sure what I have got. I was doing single leg step ups which were flute focused (loading through the heels as opposed the toes) and then oddly I have pain now when kneel, or if I’m on all fours and I back up (flexion of hamstrings), or putting socks on even, I get a sharp pain in the lower part of my hamstring right around the insertion point of the back of the knee. If I stretch through it, my tight quads become the focus and that’s where the pain is localised. But it’s really weird how it’s not healed in over a couple of months. I can perform single leg bridges with no pain whatsoever. I can perform knee rotations both internal and external rotation and no pain. I can lay on my front and perform a weightless hamstring curl, no issues. But if I kneel close to full flexion I get a gunshot style pain deep in the hamstring and then it goes. But why? I can sprint, no problems. I don’t limp around, but something causes a twang sensation. Anyone got any ideas?

3rd time pulling it 😂, first 2 were from sports, so during off season when my hamstrings felt decent I strengthen my legs so much with lifting. My legs felt better than they did ever. 9 months later I’m just walking and I turn and I feel the pull outta nowhere it pulls. 😂 I don’t know how that’s possible but it is what it is
