Honestly losing to the same card passed up makes it hard not to want to do it money vs winning aside it's just too funny from a karmic retribution stand point of sorts.

The only reason ev would be higher is because maybe you could get sponser if u win more and more?

I’ve only played magic twice borrowing a buddy’s other deck but I would have drafted it for the value. I play Yu-Gi-Oh and have pulled a lot of triple digit valued cards, but only one was more than $200 and that was about $600 when it was pulled but has since gone down in value by almost half now so I’d definitely draft tarmogoyf for the value

I probably would have kept it as a souvenir as the commentators said. Yeah, the $$ is nice, but I mean, you'd have the only card of it's kind.. and pulled it yourself.

I would 100% have taken the card I don't care what people say Yes I'm at a magic tournament but I also have a child that has needs having a card worth that much that I can get rid of to buy something nice for my daughter would mean more to me than a top Yes I'm not a professional magic player and I have not played in a very long time but I still feel that I would take the money from the one card over a top at an event simply because I can sell it and get something nice for my daughter that I normally couldn't afford

It's incredible to me that the top five comments I see all mention hate-drafting the Tarmogoyf. Lol. First of all, a good player would never pass a great card for their deck like Burst Lightning to hate-draft a card that'll go to one of their seven opponents that they might not even ever play against. Secondly, Tarmogoyf isn't even a bomb in limited! It's OP in constructed when you can crack a fetchland and play a cheap instant or sorcery and quickly get an oversized creature. In limited, it's likely to be an 0/1 on turn 2, growing into a vanilla 3/4 at best, which is barely worth playing.

Idk why it’s controversial, if you have a 1 in a million opportunity, or you can pick the easy safe card you’re quickly going to own ten of, the choice is obvious

I would have gone for it. Not only is it ensuring it cannot be used against me, but it means I can say "I possessed one of the rarest cards in the game"

Anyone would’ve taken that but lied about the reason they took it lol, Owen would’ve probably said he took it so no one else could have it lol. Owen’s “apology” seems it was written while he was seething no one else agreed with them and criticized him instead.

Is the tournament stamp unique btw? Because if so, I wouldn't be surprised if the card sold for more than even the 2000$ that he got, given the history and drama around it.
