Fascinating, I never thought that the reason these strange people were knocking my door was they were lonely, depressed and just needed something to believe in. But mine was the wrong door to knock for validation, I would politely invite them in and ply them with cups of tea while challenging them on basic facts like the age of the planet, fossils, tree rings, atoms, the big bang. I was met with so much ignorance that I felt really sorry for them. I wasn't offended that they were on a recruitment drive, they never stood a chance with a learned man who had all the answers to their questions.

I feel people need to come to terms with the circle of life in their own way - they are entitled to believe in any deity that gives them comfort, but I cannot tolerate the ignorant recruiting the vulnerable into their lonely pointless pseudo-religion. Harsh but true.

thanks for sharing...I wasn't raised JW, but I have heard others speak about the trauma they have because of being so afraid as children. I remember one little girl being carried to the ladies room crying out help, help. ( she knew she was getting a spanking. One of the things on starting day of assembles and conventions was to suggest if the children misbehaved , " get to the seat of the problem" . Mr. N told how his mother conducted home Bible study: a Bible in one hand and a switch in the other. ( or maybe that was a belt, but you get the idea. )
