Vienna must be the current spy hub. Check out the Russian embassy on Google Earth - massive satellite dishes for listening. Putin came to visit for a wedding. Austria still has close ties to Russia. It was well known that Vienna was home to tons of spies in the 90s too.

Dear dw there was no russia who freed the city of the nazi rule it was ussr with many nations in it and the main were Ukrainians. I probably knew several spies, growing up in communist Romania. For crying out loud, one third of the country were "Securitate", the notorious Romanian version of Stasi, informers. But I could not tell them apart from the ordinary people. When I emigrated to the West, it was Israel which became my home at first. There, I was myself met with suspicion, having emigrated (legally I must add) from a communist country. Perhaps they thought I may be a spy myself. For SURE they thought I was a spy. :-)))

Berlin is not the "spy capitol " of the world . That is not true .

For the last three / four centuries all the sides might think they have different sides but work for same paymasters. Poor spies are just used as a tool in the process. Actually until 1955 Vienna had the same situation. It was divided by the victorious powers. I remember because when I was in Vienna my grandmother lived in the Russian zone and when we visited her, we obviously did also. In Hallein we lived in the American zone.Also, Niederösterreich was Russian and Vienna is in that center. So, it was a similar if smaller situation as Germany.

Great documentary! I recall traveling through it all during the 60s, 70s and 80s…we all carried coins in case we had to use a public phone! It’s all rather comical now with our cell phones but strangely eerie during the Cold War.
