Old Irontown, Utah is a ghost town and unincorporated community in Dixie National Forest. It's Utah's first ghost town and was founded in 1868 as a second attempt to mine iron from Iron Mountain. The town was named Iron City, but was renamed Old Irontown after the Edmunds–Tucker Act and the Panic of 1873 forced it to close.
Brigham Young, the second president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, wanted to take advantage of the iron deposits in the area to produce iron products. He called families to Southern Utah to work in the church's “Iron Mission”. The town grew rapidly, with a monthly payroll between 1874 and 1875 rising from $500 to $4,000. At its peak, Iron City's furnace produced 800 pounds of iron every eight hours. However, iron production ceased in 1876 due to the cost of shipping iron from the east being cheaper than driving it up from Cedar City in wagons. The town was abandoned and left to slowly decay.
Old Irontown is now part of Frontier-Homestead State Park. Visitors can see the remains of a pioneer cabin, kiln, furnace, grinding stone, and foundry area. The ruins include a preserved beehive-shaped charcoal oven. There are also two ¼-mile long interpretive trails.
Old Irontown is located in Dixie National Forest, approximately 22 miles (35 km) from Cedar City. To get there, take Highway 56, then turn south on Old Irontown Road.
Before visiting the park, visitors are encouraged to first stop by the Frontier Homestead State Park Museum in Cedar City to obtain a better understanding of the area and to pick up a self guided tour brochure.
